I have messaged my vet this morning but awaiting a response and thought I would see if anyone else has had a similar issue and what it might be!
Bit of background:
My mare has been a bit 'naughty' past couple of weeks but I had just put it down to being a bit fresh/having to have haylage because she wont eat hay, and needing to get out for a days hunting to burn off some steam! She's a busy little mare and very fit so that thinking was justified at the time. Plus shes been in a fair bit keeping our other one company on box rest and we also haven't been able to get out hunting for a few weeks. Shes been a bit 'cold backed' (unusual) and the last time I cantered she kept flinging her head up as if I was socking her in the gob, which I wasn't. This rung alarm bells as she has certainly never done that before. Teeth up to date by a vet who specialises in teeth. Saddle checked less than 2 months ago. I lunged her last night and she didn't look quite right behind (stiff/not tracking up, looked ok on the straight when a friend trotted her up). so I brought her back in the stable and had a poke around....well, she nearly took my head off when i rubbed her stifles. She has never done this before and she is NOT a nasty mare, she actually shot to the back of the stable as she was mortified that she had bared her teeth at me and lifted a leg!
I am hoping the vet is able to get out to me this week. I would normally just wait until shes been rather than asking others opinions but its worrying me a bit. Ive had her since she was 3 (now 11) and shes never sick or sorry! We've had a myriad of health issues with other horses over the past few years but never had anything with touchy stifles...red herring maybe?!
Any ideas while I sit here and stew on it?
