doe's anyone tow with either a nissan x trail or land rover freelander? were looking for a fairly cheap 4x4 to tow 1 pony but don't know which to choose!!! help.....
also been looking at the disco (my fav) range rover and shogun, just don't know which way to go
many thanks

A freelander isn't heavy enough to tow safely...though people still use them. Not sure about the Nissan

I am a Jeep owner, so completely biased towards them :D

When towing please consider the safety of your horse(s) and other road users.
It all very much depends on the weight of the trailer and the horse you wish to trail.
Freelanders are out of the question as they are too light.

I used to have an xtrail - I know a lot of people who tow with them but the clutch in mine was knackered after about 8 months so I suspect they are not designed for towing much although legally can tow 2000kg.

I've changed to an older Shogun which is much better for towing by more expensive to run - I'm considering changing to a Sorento/Santa Fe or Rexton as these have good towing reps and are a bit cheaper to run.

I tow my horse with an Discovery 2.5 TDi. It tows superbly and i would highly recommend them. No problem up steep hills or in muddy fields. The fuel consumption hardly increases with towing which is another plus point! It is also a very comfortable car to drive and very reliable, i've had it for nearly 4 years with no problems (*touch wood*).

Apparently freelanders are too light to tow and i have heard some horror stories about them towing, so probably best to avoid them!

A friend of mine has a Freelander, she was told she could tow 2.2ton but I'm not convinced. Personally I wouldn't but she's going to go for a single horse trailer.

BB - I have a Kia Sorento which I love. Just a point tho, when I was looking for a tow car I considered the Santa Fe. I was in the Hyundai dealers looking at a £13,000 Santa Fe and the guy actually said I would be better off with a Terrican at £7,000. Apparently the Terrican is more on a par with the Sorento than the Santa Fe.

I have an X trail and tow with it, it has done over 130K miles now (03 reg), about half of it towing, it's still on its first clutch and although battered and bruised (I have a narrow gateway and penchant for driving into things:D) it still goes rather strongly!
It's my most favourite car ever:)

I also have an X-Trail. I love it! Its a 2006 2.2dci. I tow an Ifor HB505 with one pony and can hardly feel it behind the car. When I have occasionally travelled two ponies I can "feel" the extra weight but it still tows like a dream! Even uphill on motorways I can press the accelerator for more speed/power, whereas on my friends Nissan Terrano with just one pony my foot is pretty much hard down up every hill and it sometimes loses power even then, even though the Terrano can legally tow more weight, it doesn't tow nearly as well as my X-Trail.

Also in deep mud my X-trail has got me through areas where Discoveries and Freelanders have floundered on more than a few occasions! A few parking stewards have commented the japanese cars fare better than the Land Rovers.

Hope this helps
