I know this has been done lots but looking to update x trail for something bigger, we now regularly tow two 16 hand plus in a 506 and think need bigger car what do you recommend, don't do silly miles in it 6000 ISH a year looking to spend no more than £10k max and might upgrade to 511 in time. Thanks

You need to look for something that has a towing capacity of 3000kg + for 2 horses and a trailer. That limits your choices - if you look on Auto Trader the dimensions quoted for each vehicle give towing capacity. If I remember rightly some of them are Trooper (brilliant, mine was fantastic but they don't make them any more and the 3ltr had an engine problem - make sure it has had it recalled or fixed. Mine succumbed to old age at 16 and well over 200k miles) Shogun, Discovery. I now have a 3 ltr Terrano, tows fine but I never tow more than one horse I think it has just 3000kg capacity.
All of them will be heavy on fuel, more so if they are automatic, but they are easier and smoother to drive.

You don't need something that towed 3000kg plus!!!! Two 16hand horses plus even a 511 won't be more than 2500 and prob more like 2000!!! I have an 06 plate Kia sorento (newer ones can't tow as much) and its max is 2800kg. I tow two large horses in a Bateson ascot and have no probs. I did have some power issues but after a fuel treatment cleaning thing there's no probs!

Check out the link in my signature below called members vehicle and trailer combinations - they have given them personal ratings out of 10

My two 16hh horses and trailer come in at just over 2000kg.

I tow with a Hyundai Terracan which tows up to 2800kg. I like mine, it pulls really well and is cheap to fix and not too bad on fuel either. I certainly won't be looking to change it for something which tows 3000kg +

It is basic though so if you like mod cons/luxury maybe not for you. It has AC and everything, it's just not plush inside :)

JillA, my Shogun's only 2800kg capacity anyway but that should cover OP fine. My price bracket was only half of OP's but from memory I think the only ones over 3k capacity were the Disco and Trooper. Maybe the Defender as well (sadly out of my price range!) but as said, 3k's not necessary anyway.

My Shogun's never had OP's amount on the back and I'm new to towing but I, OH and mothership all like it to tow with, it's not a complete killer on fuel and if my mum says it's comfy then it blooming well must be :)

I have a trooper the 3l one and had the recall work done only recently.....everyone i told when i bought it kept gasping at fuel costs etc. It hasnt made much difference from going from a freelander to a trooper as it seems to work on 'tick over' as the engine is so big & the turbo doesnt cut in very often so I'm really not seeing a difference with my fuel bill. Dont let it put u off. Good luck.

we have just brought an 06 plate kia sorrento and it is economical and great to tow with. It tows much better than my trooper i have just sold.

I'd always go for a defender if you don't need the comfort of a more car like 4x4 for every day use, nothing tows better in my opinion.
