Hey everyone, I've been rattling my brains and searching all over the net for answers.

We are looking at a 505 ifor williams trailer. We drive a 2 litre Diesel vw tiguan r line tech. It states that it can tow around 2200. The trailer Is approx 980. Our horse is about 500. Obviously there's water etc but my husband can follow with the water 😂. My question is... does anyone tow with a vw tiguan and manage ok? (not the 4 motion)

I've read, it's fine, I've read it's blown people's cars.
I don't really want to change my car but there is so many conflicting chats and write ups.

Please let me know your thoughts...

Thank you

I found towing with a 2.7l truck lacked grunt and I only ever tow one pony <400kg, I wouldn’t use a small car with a 2l engine personally. Especially not if you have hills and roundabouts to do!

a lot of people on this forum two or have done with tiguans, i personally towed a 505 with a 2 litre (kuga). it managed, but if budget allowed i’d have gone for something more gutsy. i never had any issues with it though!

It possibly depends where you live, we have some fairly steep hills round here. Why would you husband need to follow with the water? I really don't think it would make that much difference, it's not going to make you overweight if you put it in the trailer and makes no difference if you put it in the car.

I'm just thinking less weight. I'm probably just way over thinking it. I've read so much. We are in South West Wales.

I towed for a couple of years with a (4 motion) Tiguan and it was absolutely fine. We have mostly gentle rolling hills here though so can't say how it would feel or deal if there were more regular serious ups and downs

I do but I have the 4motion version (ancient 12 plate), it does a grand job for us, I've been all over the country in it and we have some fairly steep hills in Northumberland and its been great, even got up a steep muddy bank better than a disco (which tbf isn't hard lol)

Its been packed to the rafters with stuff for stayaway shows too, horse is 480kg, I have full width bars in and no partitions

Not a Tiguan but we had a Passat alltrack for a long time. That had 2.2t capacity and I happily towed my big Richardson trailer (1100kg) and 1 heavy horse (800ish kg) just fine. Big hills and deep mud were a challenge but on the Cheshire plain you have to go hunting those and it would eat up the motorway miles - I have done a few 150+ mile trips in it.

My sister does and she finds it great to tow with. She has a double ifor but just tows one horse. I have towed with it (using her set up) on one occasion when she couldn't drive and i found it great too

Sorry to jump on post - Just bought the same car as OP (69 plate) and wondered what towbar is best (I know not detachable but swan neck vs flange...) and does anyone know what electrics pin the Ifor older single horse trailers have as that what it looks like I will be buying? 🙈

The configuration of the back of your car may dictate which one you have to have, but my understanding is that there isn't a huge difference between the two fixed types, best call the company you are having fit it and ask them. Re: the electrics get the more modern pin and then get an adapter if the trailer you have had the old pins, as they're only cheap and it will help if you come to re-sell or upgrade the trailer.

Thankyou! I just wasnt sure if there is a huge amount of safety difference between the swan or flange 🙈
