I have only towed with a manaul gearbox, but thinking of getting a nearly new Discovery which we know and coming from a reliable source. it is automatic, though.
Automatics are fab to tow with - we have an Isuzu auto which is the bees knees and quite effortless for towing. The only down side is that you cant tow an auto if it gets stuck in the mud!!!! I'd go for it.
I borrowed an automatic Disco for towing a while back - it was brilliant and much easier to two with because you didn't need to think which gear you were in!
I only tow with automatics, I can tow with a manual but an Auto just makes life so much easier.
You still have gears 1 - 3 should you need them and the high low ratio option with the Discoveries so you have everything you should need in a real emrgency.
So far I've never needed them though the auto box sorts it all out for me.
Have converted a few hardened auto's are crap to tow with blokes as well

Is this a problem?

I have an auto Disco and would never go back to a manual to tow with. If you are talking Disco 3 you still have all some 6 gears to change manually if you want, but I've never found a reason for it.
Easy as pie to tow with and a super smooth ride for the neddy!
If you get stuck in the mud you should have a lo range button to pull you out. Failing that when a tractor tows you, remember to put the gear box to "N" for neutral!
Reason you shouldn't tow an Auto, is you have two pumps in an automatic gear box, one at either end.
When you tow an auto only the first pump works and this builds up pressure in the gearbox and you can explode the gear box.
You could tow it for very short distances say 100 yards max.

Polar bear that might be true with the very old automatics but the more modern ones are absolutely fine to tow with.
Our ML270 is capable of towing 3.5tons, we pulled a double trailer with it and 2 big horses round to shows every weekend for nearly 4 years with ours we recon we were pulling about 2.3tons, some trips being 5 or 6 hours each way. never did it any harm at all we still have the car.
A friend of mine has towed with her auto landrover for nearly 12 years and no harm has come to it.

i think you've misunderstood. she was explaining why you cannot tow an auto, not tow with an auto!
