Advice wanted pkease! I can tow 1800 with my vw Tiguan (petrol, manual) but I’m looking at an hbx506 which is 865kg and my horse is 500kg. We only will be towing locally so won’t ever be taking lots of water, just minimal tack and only ever one horse. I think I should be ok but just wanted to get people’s views please! We also live in a very flat part of the uk! Any advice appreciated please

I towed with a 2014 Tiguan regularly it pulled like a train only got rid because we wanted a pick up Isuzu dmax to put our dogs in for the beating season. By the sounds of it you are within your limits on weight. Often these cars are powerful enough to pull more than they say they can the reason they are limited is based on breaking capabilities/stopping not ability to pull. Many transit vans can pull 3.5t but are only 2/2.5l but built with better breaking systems. Hope this helps !

Are there any hills? If so you may struggle…it not then technically you probably can but personally I prefer towing with a more powerful car so I feel I can overtake if I have to safely or go up the hills near me etc…my old car was lower I think 2000ish and it rolled back a bit on hill starts or even slight slopes! It was very annoying!

For me it would depend on how gutsy the car is - 1400kg of an 1800kg limit is about as close as I'd like to go, but if the car pulls well and feels stable braking and downhill (Tiguans are quite big, aren't they) I'd probably give it a go. Just don't go too fast and try to avoid any truly awful hills.

Both our cars have an 1800kg limit and they both tow my setup (total weight about 1300kg) just fine. They are both diesels though, so although we're slow up hills I know we're always going to get there in the end. I don't ever overtake with the trailer on (except the occasional cyclist) and I don't tow on motorways. So long as you drive to the capabilities of your car I think you'll be okay. Obviously a more powerful car is always nicer to tow with, but we can't all afford a massive vehicle only for towing.
