I'm looking to buy an ifor Williams HB506 to carry my 16hh. I'm looking for recommendations for best vehicle to tow with. I am thinking something like a Rav4 as it will have to be my daily use vehicle as well. Thanks

I’m sure rav 4’s only have a towing capacity of 1500kg but I could be wrong, I’m sure thats what the one we had could tow but that was about 15+ years ago.

Have to say I love my Touareg for towing. Had a Tiguan before and it did a good job but feel much better with the bigger proper car for the job.

I'm guessing your horse will weigh 500-600kg depending on build so with the trailer weighing 900kg, that will take you to 1400 - 1500kg. Any of the smaller SUVs should manage that so it's just your preference really. You will need to double check the towing capacity as it can vary across different specs and engines. Automatics tend to tow less weight. Depending on your budget there are lots of options for that weight. I've towed with a few in that class - a CRV, a Tiguan and a Freelander and been a passenger with friends towing with a Kia Sportage, a Kia Sorrento and a Subaru Forester (quite an old one) . The Freelander (or Discovery Sport if you're looking at newer vehicles) would be my choice of those. The very last of the Freelanders (about 2015) were when they got it just right - then they stopped making them!

Of course, if you don't have the B+E (towing licence) you could go for a single trailer and the right car so that you don't have to take the test. An estate car might be an option for this, especially if you want something that's fairly economical for day to day driving.

I towed a 401 (single trailer) with my Rav4 and it felt at the upper end of it's capacity, i had to do a hill start on a very steep junction, it was quite twitchy!

Besides, it was the worst car I've ever had, i couldn't wait to get rid.

Those who have said Kia Sorrento what year car do you have and what MPG do you get in real life? I'm looking for a new car myself and dont believe the online stats :D

I had an old 2004 XS manual which did around 36-38mpg everywhere regardless of towing. I now have a 2013 KX-2 which does 41mpg on average - I do a mixed bag of motorway miles, city traffic & lanes.

do you have a manual or automatic? I'm looking at a 2011 automatic with tow weight of 2000KG to occasionally tow with my 1000kg ifor 510 and a friends horse 642kg. I need the vehicle to be auto for post knee op issues, but hoping it will have enough umph to tow ok.

Both of mine were/are manual - I found my old one with the higher towing capacity had more grunt & the newer one, the one I have now I need to go up & down 4/5/6th gear a fair bit to get it to power up a hill nicely.
