Right - the licence says

If you hold a category B licence and wish to tow a trailer you may do so provided
(1) the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3500 kg or
(2) the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed 750 kg.
If you wish to tow a heavier trailer you must hold a category EB licence.

I have a SWB ford maverick (older version R reg) and a IW505. My horse is a 16.2hh ISH. Any advise regarding weight?

I haven't got a clue and OH is getting fed up of carting me around!

When did you pass your driving test ?

If you passed your test after 1997 you will need to take a trailer test, even if your combination of car, horse and trailer weighs less than 3500kg. It is the potential weight it is judged on, not the actual weight.

Basically if you passed your test after 1997 then all you can legally tow without supervision is a small flat trailer with a few bales of hay in the back!

If you have a cat B licence then you can tow horse plus trailer on L plates under the supervision of someone who can legally tow the weight.

OK passed licence after 1997 but that doesn't matter, i am talking about an Irish licence - not UK.

Basically i am asking if anyone knows the weight of a IW505, the approx weight of a 16.2hh ISH and the weight of a SWB ford maverick!

Ok this is a very grey area in Ireland. Technically you would have to do a trailer test. However as the waiting time to do any driving test in the Republic is years very few people actually do the trailer test. The same rules are meant to apply as in the UK in that if you pass your test after 1997 and you want to tow a trailer you have to the test.

As a result of the long waiting time, virtually no one does the test. However, this is all fine and well unless you are unfortuntate and are involved in an accident. Then the other party could turn around and say that you do not have a correct driving licence. Also double check with you insurance company that are covered. I live the republic but went to school in Belfast and learnt to drive in NI so did my car and car+trailer tests up there.
