Comparing my auto pick up to a defender and to my oh's same age manual pick up, mine uses much less fuel than either of them. Perhaps years ago automatics were thirstier but don't think that is necessarily true now.

That may be so but I'm afraid my budget restricts me to older vehicles. I am shortly to take over another of my father's cast offs, a TD5. He's had both auto and manual TD5s and according to him the autos are more thirsty.

My other half bought a 5.0 V10 touareg and they only come in auto. I was a bit hesitant due to not driving an auto much before but I love it for driving and towing.

I gather fuel is a lot cheaper where you are. The fact that autos use more fuel is the main reason why I will never have one.

However our Shogun has a fancy computer thing that tells you the fuel economy I guess it measures the fuel going through the system vs the miles on the sat nav as it seems to update every half a mile or so, and I DO try to keep the fuel economy up, it's definitely improved my economy of driving!
