hi

we have recently put down a deposit on a Bateson Deauville and are now in the process of exchanging our bmw estate for a tow car.

today I test drove a Q7, discovery and Toureag but much preferred the feel of something smaller like a q5 or Volvo XC60. The q5 and Volvo XC60 models we are looking at both have a tow capacity of 2,400kg (capacity of laden trailer is Max 2,300kg). It is lightweight trailer anyway at only 860kg unladen and would majority of the time take our 13.1 fell pony (approx 400kg) and occasionally a larger horse too (approx 600kg). I don't envisage going over 1,900kg. I've looked at kerb weight 85% rule but this wouldn't be possible with this combinations..... any ideas? Recommendations? Thoughts are very welcome?

Thankyou

As Rog says, the 85% isn't for horse boxes. As long as you're within the vehicle's capacity (and it sounds like you'll be well within it) you'll be fine. No manufacturer will give a car a capacity it can't cope with and isn't safe to tow - they'd get sued right left and centre.
