well I am going through the same dilema.........currenetly I have a 1994 Mits Pajero.......reliable but old!!!
Because I use this vehicle everyday ( 100 miles a day ) I fancy something a little newer / comfortable.
so I have looked @ the Kia................but parts / labour on repairs very expensive ( my brother in law serves Kia for a living)
also the Jeep Grand Cherokee...LPG ans the 2.7 Mercedes engine - looking in the running thanks to HHO'ers
and back with another Mits............L200 / Shogun etc again due to posts / feedback by HHO'ers
so even after having an approved loan I still have my 1994 Pajero ......why? well it has never let me down so I am waiting for another 6 months - I am not good with change!!
If I was renewing now it would have to be Mits or the Jeep.....
another glass of vino if u got this far.....but shopping is so hard!!!!
I actually tow with a Kia Sportage diesel auto. I have two horses it in and its never ever let me down! I had it from new and its now done 80,000 miles on one service and towed for over half of that. Never got stuck or struggles even when on wet days when i have seen others struggle on fun rides etc. I would highly reccomend a Kia Obviously the sorrento is bigger still so should Tow even better! My car i feel has been really economical for a 4x4 and it has earned its keep.
I tow with a Sorrento its brill. As for servicing costs my dealer has a pay monthly scheme which is £25 a month which covers the cost of the service and includes free breakdown cover. Not the cheapest to run, but i love mine. Pulls my ifor and 2 horses with ease.
I have a Terracan that I use as my everyday car as well as for towing and I love it. It pulls my trailer with my 2 in without a problem, and it has been fantastic in all this snow too.
Sorry no help to your post as wondering about changing my oldie Mits shogan not sure if should go for a new one of something different. Anyone every towed with a mercedes ML? Went a test drive in one was lovely but past experience of towing with one is hard to find!
When we were looking to change our Jeep recently the salesman told us the Sorrento is equivalent in towing capacity to the Cherokee. We decided to stick with the Cherokee (it is our 3rd)
The person towing with the Sportage is probably breaking the law, I think 2 horses and a trailer exceeds the max towing capability of that vehicle, you would find your insurance invalid in the event of any accident.
I love my Kia Sorrento for normal driving and towing. It's a diesel manual and tows like a dream (got an IW511). Before I got mine I asked loads of Kia Sorrento owners and everyone I asked loved theirs (I literally banged on car windows!) but obviously it's personal opinion.
I too had the choice of a terracan or a sorrento and my end choice was basically that I preferred the look of the Kia.
If you are planning to buy brand brand new I believe they have changed the chassis on the new ones so they can't tow quite as much as the older ones (only something like 500kg less). I may be wrong but I'm sure I heard that somewhere.
DizzyKizzy I was wondering that but I think they would be borderline depending on what they're towing and size of horses. I believe the Sportage they're using can tow up to 1800kg as it's the largest version, is that right Taluna? I wanted to make sure I was well within legal and car towing ability limits so that's why I went for the Sorrento. It's way more than I need but was within my budget.
Hey,
This has made interesting reading and i have just checked the towing allowance for my Sportage xs Diesel, and your right LmuirEDt its 1800 kg. Its advisable to go for somthing bigger if your doing towing every day but for recreational puproses its fine.I tow a newish bateson ascot trailer which i believe are the lightest trailers and the horses i tow are a 15.1 and a 16.2. I actually brought it from a kia dealer in Stoke who used one to tow his horse trailer and he also had had no problems.

I hate to say it taluna but I have to as I've been in a bad trailer accident caused by the towing vehicle not being heavy enough for the trailer and load.
Your Sportage has a towing limit of 1800kg. A Bateston Ascot weighs 925kg which only gives you 875kg to play with. Obviously I don't know what your horses are like but together they will easily weigh more than 875kg. My 15hh arab weighs 550kg. So you are almost certainly exceeding your cars towing limit and your insurance will be invalid should you have an accident. That Kia dealer was very negligent in selling you the car and telling you it was fine for towing two horses. You may well have some come back on him if you can prove that's what he told you.
I have a Hyundai Santa Fe - it's towing limit is 2200kg and I will only tow a lightweight trailer and one horses at a time. Never two because it's just not worth the risk.
Back to the topic the Sorrento's have an excellent reputation for towing - everyone I know who has one loves it. And yes the new Sorrento is being sold from March and does have a lower towing limit - down to 2500kg, but that's still enough for a two horse trailer and two average sized horses.
