My old faithful P38 seems to be failing on me....

currently looking at Shogun, Touareg, M class merc thingys, more old Range Rovers, and what have you.

Any suggestions / reviews?

Needs to tow HB510 with one large horse (16.3hh clydesdale cross) and one small (11.2hh) welsh section B pony.

Budget around £7k or thereabouts. Reliability and fuel economy of most importance, though does low milage as I use public transport most of the time (unless I am taking a horse with me, obviously!), and only compete locally.

All of those would be suitable for your needs, but Range Rovers have a reputation for being problematic and unreliable (you would know more about this as you already own one though). Shogun or Toureg would be good, the older M Classes had issues, but the newer ones are meant to be better (although possibly a bit above your budget).

Is the mpg actually that important if only going on a few localish trips?

I assume this is for B+E licence towing?

Shogun or Pajero all the way. Ideally Pajero if you are looking to spend about 7K cos the imports havent had the years of salt on the roads and tend to be in better nick than equivalent Shoguns that have always been in the UK.
:D

I love my Toyota Hylux.
According to the AA man we were talking to yesterday the jeep is not a great tow car, and funnily enough i hated the one we had for a couple of years.

Is a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport 3.0 V6 Warrior too light, at a max braked tow weight of 2800kg? I am used to having 3500kg capcity... The 3.2 DiD has 3200kg capacity which I think I am more comfortable with. Can' find many Pajeros. Skippy, can you find me a nice one?

The Merc ML 2.7TD is 3500kg, but it looks small from the photos! Need to go and try one. What's their reliability like though? Whats the cut off point re. old and new?

I think I am a bit worried about the Jeep's reliability and cost of parts.....

Love the Touareg, but the boot is quite small for dog plus tack. I have driven a few newer ones than my £7k budget extends to - are the older ones reliable?

I wouldn't rule out a pickup as long as it had a good 'lid' on the boot - OH had a Nissan Navarra for years, but no lid, so dog had to share back seat with daughter, and tack got wet - blooming nightmare. He then got a VW Amarok which had great 'lid', but was a nightmare and spent more than 50% of it's 9 months of ownership in dealers awaiting parts - he ended up sending it back to VW and getting a Disco. Not sure about the logic in that given Landrover's reputation for breakdowns (read a whopping 71% per anum!?), but his experience has sort of put me off my previously lusted after Touareg!

Mpg I suppose shouldn't be such an issue - I have done about 30k miles in my 5 years with the P38 - but I would do more miles if I could afford to put fuel in the blooming thing! So would prefer as economical as possible. Reliability I think is the most important though (alongside towning capabilities and big enough for big dog in boot). Oh, prefer auto for towing as well, and robust leather interior for ability to be washed, as gets used as a skip on wheels!

Wonder if I need to up budget and get a Toyota Landcruiser 3.0 diesel, which would be a great tool, but at my budget I am looking at serious milage! Eeek - just checked out tow weights and it is down at 2800kg braked as well!

...back to Autotrader, which is seriously curtailing my HHO time......

Is it for towing only or is it an everyday car too? I've towed with a few different makes and models over the years and in my opinion the Defender 90 is by far the best to tow with, it just feels like it's meant to do it. You're not going above 60 when towing anyway so it's lack of top end speed isn't an issue as it might otherwise be!

Not the best for comfort though so if it has to double up as an everyday car it's not ideal.

ETA - P38 renowned for being the most unreliable of all the Range Rovers so if yours has been an 'old faithful' you're likely to only get a more reliable Range Rover than you've already got.

I always have a range rover and a defender to tow with both are Fanastic towing vehicles but an old range rover could cost you a fortune to keep going so buy carefull and with an experianced person to advise you if you go that route.
My range rovers have always been very reliable I have never had a bad one but mine are always almost new when I get them.
I have driven defenders all my life and love them they are the ultimate towing and off roader we use ours for towing when we go hunting and it's never failed to get us out of a muddy hole if you are buying older you need to be carefull of the rearcross members that often need replacing and will cost around £1500 to do but a good one is vital for towing.
Defenders are clunky to drive but I love them however I don't do long trips in mine just around home local town etc I have the range rover for long trips , defenders also leak ,they always do ,wet carpets in the front foot wells are normal and the sitting position is upright especially if you are tall but they are still my Favorite vehicle .

I tow mine with a defender but like the above poster i find the seat too upright on long journeys. But it'll tow a house and I do love it!

We're looking at getting a new disco or range though as shows the BE's can be far away and need a bit more comfort to selling car and 4x4 and getting one that will do both jobs.

I would have a Toyota but not a Nissan or a Mitsubishi as the people I know that have them only moan about them and both Nissans i know have had to be scrapped at 100k miles

I tow my 510 with a Landrover Discovery 3 and it pulls better than any other 4x4 we've had.

We used to have a Pajero and that towed fine, you'll be able to get one of those for your budget and have change:)
