I passed my test in August 1999 which means the only categories on my licence are B and B1.

That means I have to take another test in order to be able to tow a horse trailer. Really annoying!

Has anyone been through the towing test? What's it like? Do you have to do another theory?

I haven't done it but am thinking about doing it. A friend of mine has done it, and said it was no problem, but from what she said it sounded horrendous (but then I have issues with reversing a normal car, let alone with a trailer attached

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but it is quite hard to pass first time. Most people fail first and then pass second time. I sat it once with no instruction and failed and then the second time I sat it I made a complete balls up of the reversing (so failed again). Have a look at this website- they are the people who got me through mine and are fantastic. They train people in Shrewsbury area too but even if they are miles away from you the website is ridiculously concise about what the test entails
trailer training

It prepares you for everything!!

I've done mine, it's ok as long as you are prepared for it. I had 2 lessons and found it pretty straight forward. I know the lessons can be expensive but I really don't think there's any point trying to bypass them. I did mine and learnt what i had to and passed fine, yet someone i know thought she knew it all already (which she didn't) and failed.
Basically you have to answer a few questions about the car and trailer and towing (i felt like a mechanic!!) and then do your reversing maneuover (which is fine once you've practised it a couple of times), emergency stop, then they take you for a drive, unhitch and hitch back up and do all the car and trailer checks and thats it. That's when they tell you you passed!! Well that's the idea anyway!!
