I am on a low budget and currently have a friend who lends me her lorry or car and trailor!! Yes she is wonderful to me! I would really like to swap my current family car for a vehicle capable of towing a 16hh cob. I have access to a light box.

Is there a car that would be economical as a fanily car for running around, going to the stables, that is cheap to Tax/mpg and legally capable of towing a 16hh heavy cob?

Or am I living in cuckoo land?

Do you have a B+E licence? - important to know as it could restrict what is recommended

What weight do you need the vehicle to pull - weight of empty trailer plus load ??

Yes I am well old!... Not sure about weight of trailer as I don't actually own one! was just told its very light weight, sorry this is all rather vague, not overly sure how heavy the horse is either!!!!!! could we talk hypothetically?

Most trailers for horses are under 1000 and most horses do not weight more than 700 so I would say you need a towing vehicle with at least 1800 towing capacity

As you have a B+E licence then nothing else really matters weight wise

Hi i was in the same situation as you a few years ago!! i bought a Landrover Freelander 2lt diesel, most will say they are crap but the right one is fine for what you want, had mine 3yrs now, from a 99 to 06 plate are good, diesel is a must NOT petrol many have problems with the head gaskits blowing!!! has a towing capacity of 2000kg so one cob is fine, cheap enough to run between 28 to 35mpg, been all over the country with mine without any problems, good luck!!

Sorry for being dumb!!!!!!:D

so I have a grand scenic for an example it is 1600 and it can tow braked Max weight of 1300kg, so if the trailer was 1000kg, I can tow a 300kg pony??

thankyou so much!! that wouldn't be much different from my scenic!! I am currently putting about £30 in it a week just flitting around here and there!! is yours a manual?

How much do you pay tax?

The only dumb thing would be not to ask !!

You have those figures correct

ADVICE - get the weight of the empty trailer and the horse first

Yes I will, but you have made it clear for me and have been very kind! I take it, it's best to not be at the absolute max too?? or are the weights on the generous side?

What I meant was, if i did all the calculations and my trailer and horse came to 1700kg, is there anything wrong in getting a car that max tow weight is 1700kg, or is it best to go for a bit extra ie 2000kg?

Always go for that bit extra if possible - you never know what else you might want to put in with the horse in the future

No more questions I promise!! Cheers!

Am actually quite surprised how much you can tow with "normal" cars... like my old saab 9-3 convertible, would have nearly towed it!

Car tax is £112 for 6months insurance is roughly £300 a year? yes manual, love my car!!! will go anywhere in it but i will say always look after them as the electrics can stop working, my sunroof sticks sometimes, but mine is 13yrs old!

Usually the min you mention freelander on here, ppl go nuts lol, nice to hear something positive, my friend has a diesel automatic, and it is a slug!

I can't believe if I bought a 800kg trailer and my cob was 500kg.. my grand scenic would pull it????????????????? Why don't u ever see ppl pulling trailers with cars like that?
