So I’ve just bought a 54 plate Honda CRV, my question is can I tow with a 505, as my pony was recently weighed in at 421kg.... and do I still need to get my towing licence to tow him? Thank you in advance

I’d be very surprised if you could tow a 505 with out taking your test.
You need to know what your cars GVW/MAM is, it will be either on the V5 or on a plate on the car (e.g. under bonnet). I think the MAM of the 505 is just under 2400 so would not work on a B licence (car GVW and trailer MAM added together not to exceed 3500kg).

Ok thank you, but would towing him be an option with this set up (I have class 1 drivers in family that are happy to do the towing)!

If you're talking simply about whether the car can tow a 505 with 421kg on board then the answer is yes if it's the manual, no if this the auto. I believe that incarnation of the CR-V had a towing capacity of 1500kg for the manual and 1200kg for the auto. Your trailer is 905kg and horse 421kg so you'd be looking to tow 1326kg. Check your towing capacity on the V5 to be sure.

Depending on the model and its GVW (again on the V5) you may be able to tow it on a B licence if you downplate the trailer but it will be tight. If the car's GVW is 2100kg or below it's just about doable as you could down plate the trailer to 1400kg which would let you put 500kg of horse on it. I can't find any info on the GVW of a 2004/5 CR-V though so you'd have to check.

you have to have a trailer licence to tow a horse trailer it has to do with the total laiden weight. You can get them down graded (trailer) but that means you will only be able to tow one horse. You manual will tell you what the weight it is can tow :)

HB505 is plated at 2340 and weighs 905 empty
Horse weighs say 445
total weight to be towed 1350
Minimum trailer can be down plated to is 1400
Now the big question - what is the GVW listed for your car?
GVW or maximum authorised mass can be found on the vehicle weight plate usually hidden under bonnet or in a door frame and is listed on the keepers V5 doc

ALSO what is the towing capacity listed on the V5

Best is to get the top 2 numbers off the weight plate and post them
