Have just bought a 2l Freelander to tow an Ifor Williams 505. The man who sold me the car and the book that comes with the car say it will pull a maximum of 2000kg. Trailer is 905kg so can I safely pull a 13.2 Haflinger and 14.1 cob? On a weight tape one is 365kg and the other 400kg. I know they aren't entirely accurate weights but I have no way of correctly weighing them.

The first outing is just 2 miles down the road from where we are stabled so I guess we could drive on and find a weighbridge to be sure we are not over.

Just curious really as to if I am being ridiculous!

Thanks.

905+365+400=1670 which is well under the 2000 towing limit so I can see no reason why it should not safely and legally cope well with that

I dont think it is doable no - not practically speaking anyway

Firstly I think it does depend what licence you have - if its a B licence then I dont think the weight of the trailer and contents can be over the weight of the vehicle which I think you will be cutting it fine with and combined they mustnt be more than 3500kgs so you would be really cutting it fine if not already over by the time you have added a driver, passenger and all your stuff

If you have the B+E licence I think it would be ok legally

Having said that I wouldnt want to tow two ponies in an Ifor with a 2l car I would be looking for the most lightweight trailer I could find and just take one pony, I wouldnt be risking it for the sake of giving a friend a lift

I havent done the sums and assume that you have but think that if you end up in a situation where you are playing with the maximum getting inside 100kg becomes a make or break point then I wouldnt be risking it personally, it just becomes too risky

For venues close to home you could consider a second trip to collect a second pony maybe?

ahhh - I see Rog has spoken - well he is the expert but I am going to leave my post here as I do think there is food for thought in there!

Thank you. It will be my dad towing and he holds his HGV so no issue with licenses.

I know it would be tight, that's why I think a trip to the weigh bridge would be in order before we went anywhere further than round the corner. We would never be going anywhere further than a few miles.

Thanks

!

The bit in blue has been revoked as of 19/01/2013

The towing capacity is only for the trailer and its contents
Passengers weight and anything else in the vehicle is done within the vehicle GVW

B licence towing goes on vehicle GVW + Trailer MAM for the 3500 limit

The OP can tow if under supervision etc - see post 1000 of the HHO TOWING CLINIC thread - link below

I presume it must be one of the 2nd generation Freelanders as the original model wasn't able to tow 2k. It seems you are just legal but not much slack so I would definitely get ponies weighed and not go on any long hilly journeys or you might find it a struggle. I have two ponies (not cobs) 13.3 & 14.1 and they weigh around 400kg each, although they are a little bit on the fat side.

It was the mark 1s which had problems

2 x 400 + trailer 900 = 1700 which is well within the 2000 limit so not even close to causing any issues
