I'm looking to hire a trailer for a day from a transport company. It's only an ifor williams 506/511, but i'm confused to whether or not we'd have permission to legally tow it? due to new laws being very confusing. The person driving passed their Category B licence about 20 years ago, is this enough to be allowed to tow a horse box? Or is another licence needed?

Thanks very much :)

If they passed the test before January 1997 then they have the license to tow it. If it wAs after it gets complicated.

Obviously to be legal you also have to have a car if the right weight to tow it too.

20 years ago is 1993 which is well before the 1997 changes so they will have B+E on their licence

They will have two weights to consider
The towing capacity of the vehicle
The trailer plated MAM

The lower of those two weights will be the one not to exceed when the trailer is loaded

Thats it :)

After 1996 those that passed the car test did not get B+E so need to take the B+E (or higher category +E) test to get it

The new laws from 19/01/2013 for B+E only restrict the driver to 3500 kgs trailer plated MAM and not many have a trailer over that - I cannot think of one person who does !!

The new B+E law is only for those who pass B and B+E after 19/01/2013
