please can someone help me clear up the current towing rules. is it true u must be able to tow the mam of your trailor? for example i have freelander td4 maximum tow weight 1800kg i believe i wouldnt beable to tow a ifor williams 505 coz that has mam of 2340 . eventhough i only have one horse who weighs 550kg and unladen trailor weighs 905kg which would be below my max towing weight.though could tow a ifor williams 403 coz that has mam of 1600kg! please could someone help and tell me website which confirms it. i have looked everywhere. thank you

it's EU regulations - most people seem completely unaware of it. yes, it is true.

but, even disregarding that - what is the kerb weight of the freelander because you should never tow a load heavier than your car, regardless of what it says your max towing weight is.

i have a 3.0TD Toyota Hilux Surf which weighs approx 2.1tonnes. It's towing capacity is approx 2.5tonnes so i can safely tow my Ifor 505, but i would never put that much behind the car. ifor is 900kg unladen so max i will put on it is 2 x 600kg horses which is pretty much all the trailer can manage anyway. i would never want to load it to the MAM of 2340kg - it might overtake my car going downhill!

The freelander just isn't a suitable tow vehicle - you need a proper 4x4 for anything more than a single trailer.

thank you so much for your help i hav been trying to confirm the eu regulations but most people dont seem to of heard of them. im sure alot of people r towing ilegally. i know the freelander is not the best but i have today bought a brand new ifor williams 403 and im hoping this will be safe, legal and provide me and my horse with a great gateway to competing. thank you
