hello, havent posted on here really before but the information on the DVLA website is mystifying so i thought maybe someone on here could help

I'm 20 and have held my driving licence for two years, am I right in thinking that because i passed after 1997 i cannot legally tow anything on my current licence?

if I cant, I know that there is a car and trailer test that I can take - but then the DVLA web site gets confusing and appears to suggest that i have to take a test in the equivalent weight (i.e 3.5 or 7 tonne) rigid vehicle before you can take the towing test?!
Am i reading the website wrongly or is this true?

Also can anyone reccomend a good (cheapish) 4x4 to tow with? - would only be a lightweight trailer and a 14.3hh pony.

Yup, you will have to take the test I'm afraid. I don't know the ins and outs, but I am sure others will.

You can take your C1 which will allow you to drive a 3.5 tonner, that will cost in the region of £1500-£2000 I think.

4x4, I used to have a diahatsu fourtrak and it was ace, can get them quite cheaply. Or an old disco would be good.
 
To tow pretty much anything you would put a horse in you need to take your Category B+E test. You don't need any other rigid vehicle qualifications other than your normal car license and there is no theory test. Until then, you can tow with L-plates on the front and back to the car/trailer combination with somebody who has their B+E license (i.e. anyone who passed their driving test before '97 or has passed the towing test since then - they may well also have to be over 21 but I'm not sure about that) in the car with you.

I rang the DVLA last week as some people have said i will be OK to tow just one horse others have said i won't. Basically the weight of, car(gross) trailer and horse added together cannot be over 3.5T, so you may be able to tow a single horse. If you ring them with figures they will tell you, they were really helpfull when I rang and made it all make sense!
