Hi all

Ok I thought I was set to go for a Kia Sorento 2007 and a ifor williams 510 for my two horses (both no more than 600kg each) and then I made the mistake of trying to understand the MAM and the maximum towing weight of the sorento and now my brain is frazzled. Im not great at 'getting' new things, especially if that new 'thing' involves numbers :(

So can someone please tell me/ confirm what I think is right that a 2007 Kia Sorento automatic will tow my two horses in an ifor williams 510 trailer please?

I appreciate all advise ... but I dont want to know what car you tow with, if you think its a rubbish car or whatever .. just if the above car is suitable to tow a 510 with two big sports horses.

Thanks and sorry to be snappy, my brain is fried!!!

I don't think it will.

The Ifor is 1000kg unladen and can weigh 2700kg loaded - the MAM.

It would weigh 2200kg with your horses in. So would be within the weight with them both on.

The Kia has a towing weight of 2000kg so would be fine for one horse but not both together. Unless it's the 3.8, which has a towing capacity of 2268kg, so you would JUST squeeze it!

Hopefully I've got that right, and happy to be told if I'm wrong :)

If you look in your log book it will tell you the towing capacity.

However you need to post what engine size it is as this affects it.

By the looks of it their automatics only tow up to 2000kg and I would say no it is not capable of towing what you want.

I'm just about ready to jump .. ok thanks guys. I dont have the car yet, my current car has just been serviced and will go on the market at the weekend. My car budget is 4k maybe a bit more but I'm sure I heard the 2007 sorento was a really good towing vehicle ... :( *sigh*

ASSUMING this is with a B+E licence ......

The HB510 is 1000 empty
If the horses weight 500 each then that is 1000

IF the max tow capacity is 2000 then it is TOO close to call !!

As others have said, it depends on the model. Some tow up to 2.500kg and they'd be ok. If you haven't bought one yet, you're in a strong position, just make sure you buy the right one! Ask to see the log book as it will tell you the towing capacity clearly in black and white so there's no guesswork involved.

Be aware that most cars (with the expection of VW and Audi), whatever model you pick if you get an automatic the towing capacity usually drops by a by about 400kgs.

Some of the old Sorrentos have a capacity upto 2800Kg. If your on a B+E you would fine with an Ifor and two horses but you need to get the right model. You need to be able to tow 2200kg by the sounds of it and its always good to have some spare too so look for something that will tow 2400kg. Lots of options there.

On the list Rog put it the max for the automatics is 2000kg , so they wouldn't be able to tow the trailer with your two horses in it. They would be fine with 1 horse.

But is there any particular model I should be looking for to save time and money travelling to see unsuitable cars just to have a look in the log book?

These Kia's from Rog's list have a towing capacity of more than 2200kg which is the weight of your trailer with your two horses on board, the last 3 are only just able to do that so wouldn't really be a great idea. None of them are automatics.

Make Model Year Towing Capacity (Kg)
Kia Sorento 3.3 V6 2009 3000
Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi EX 2005 2802
Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi LX 2005 2800
Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi LX 2008 2800
Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi LX 2009 2800
Kia Sorento 3.5 V6 EX 2005 2800
Kia Sorento II - 2.0 CRDi 2011 2500
Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi 2WD 2015 2500
Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi 4WD 2015 2500
Kia Sorento 2.4 LX 2005 2304
Kia Sorento 2.4 EX 2005 2300
Kia Sorento 3.8 2007 2268
Kia Sorento 3.8 EX 2008 2268
Kia Sorento EX 4x4 2008 2268

Just seen you want an automatic, an automatic Landover discovery will do the job nicely. I know they're marmite but they do a good job, I've towed all sorts with one, including the odd horsebox out of the mud ;) Currently as I just have the one horse I'm using an automatic Freelander.

But as everyone's said you need to find out the towing capacity of any car you're looking at and with your trailer and your 2 horses is needs to be more than 2200kg. The list/site Rog linked to is really good you can change the drop down field to any manufacture and it then lists your options with their maximum tow weights shown.

I'll be happy to tell you that you're wrong. This is the 2007 model, not the toy Sorento that's been brought out. The 2.5 Auto has a braked towing capacity of 2800kg which is plenty for the IW510 and 2 x 600kg horses.

OP, based of the list above and your stated towing weight of 2200kg I would go for any in the list highlighted in bold.
I ignored the first one as a 3.3l V6 petrol is going to cost an arm, a leg and a few other bits to run.
All of the highlighted ones give you a margin of safety.
Just make sure you go for the manual version.

I drive an automatic ... I can never go back Batgirl .. never I tell you ;)

Me too - it was something I came across while searching for an automatic to tow with though - every model that was fine in manual lost a load of towing capacity. I got an automatic tiguan which is VW and actually has a huigher towing capacity than its manual counterpart.

One thing I learned was to ask for the towing capacity when I rang up :)

Some others to consider. With £4k you might have to look at older ones but you might find a hidden gem.

Mitsubishi - Shogun / Shogun Sport
Nissan Teranno
Landrover - Defender / Discovery / Range Rover
Hyundai Santa Fe (only certain models tow enough you'd have to do some research)

I've got an ancient shogun/pajero 2.8 auto that was probably with Noah in the ark but it's the best towing vehicle I've ever had...and I've had and broken a fair few

Everyone I know who's had a sorento had had major engine problems...like several grands worth

Yep, ours needed over £4k spending on it. Luckily we managed to get the dealer to take it back.

We have a pick up now, most tow over 2.5t, many 3t or more

Ancient Landrover Discovery here. Diesel so should have a good few years left, automatic so lovely to drive and it would pull the house never mind the trailer if I asked it to :) We keep it just for towing, the odd tip run and taking the dogs out if we know they will get wet or muddy.

Its not pretty and is a bit faded and tatty but it only cost me about 10 days salary and its some work horse!

Yep, ours too. Fantastic tow vehicle, pulls like a dream. But has just cost us £4k in engine repairs. It's a 2006 with less than 100k on the clock.
