Thinking about doing my b+e license but before I do is there any setup car + trailer suitable which only b license would be necessary.

Happy for single trailer. Pony probably weighs around 400kg but I'd rather estimate at 500kg to make sure within limit legal and safely.

Thanks

You need to add together your Gross Vehicle Weight (also known as the MAM) plus the MAM for the trailer and if that comes to less than 3.5 tonnes you can tow with a B licence. It's not the weight of the car, or trailer, or horse, its how much the maximum weight of each can be. So a Skoda Octavia Scout 4 x 4 has a GVW of 2096 kg and a maximum towing weight of 2000kg. Take 2096 away from 3500 and your trailer must have a MAM of less than 1404 kg. The Ifor Williams single trailer has a MAM (or gross weight) of 1600 kg, so you would have to get it replated down to 1400 kg. It would still be able to carry a horse up to about 600 kg because the trailer only weighs around 770 kg.

And you have to consider the weight of everything you carry adds up to your total weight ..fuel screenwash person equipment..so realistically the answer is no you can't.
A car/trailer/horse added your be cutting it so fine...

As long as all this stuff is in the car its fine and accounted for in the GWV (or MAM). This weight is the theoretical amount that can be put in the car which is why its a lot higher than the actual weight of the vehicle (curb weight). You'd not want to put anything more than horse + hay in the trailer though.

I tow with a downplated ifor 403 (to 1400) and an old freelander with a 550kg horse on a B license.

Yes, this is correct. I've just bought a beautiful single Cheval Liberte trailer which is only 650kg, it's doable if you can find the right combo. I believe some Nissan X Trails can be used as well as the Scout and Freelander which have been mentioned. Just make sure you double check as different models can have different MAMs. Good luck!!
