I know I can read up on this but to be honest every time I have attempted to I have given up as I can't understand the jargon.

So, basically I have a standard license - passed my test in 1998 - not sure if that means anything.

Can I.... tow?

What is my weight limit? I would be driving a Freelander, mare weighs around 550kg - rough guess (I tend to manage her weight by eye - I know I should find out!)

I have no idea what other info you would need. I guess the type of trailer would come into play? I don't have one but I am thinking about it - maybe.

HELP!

If you passed your test after 1st jan 1997 then you won't be able to tow a horse trailer without an additional towing test- I am in a similar position! You can tow a tiny trailer (would have to check the exact weights online- it confuses me too!) but not a horse trailer (not even an empty one- the weights are based on how much the trailer can take I believe, not on how much is in there).
I passed my test something like 5 or 6 years ago, and I can tow my dad's tiny trailer that will fit 6 bales of straw in it, but nothing bigger.
If you have a person sat next to you who can tow horses and you have L-plates on then you can tow- but to do it on your own you'd need a separate towing test.
Hope that makes sense!

Urgh. I feared that that was the case. Poo, oh well probably a good thing as now I can persuade myself out of buying a trailer. I had the vague idea of starting to show or travel to beach but looks like we will stay put!

...or you could have lessons and take the test? :) I can just afford insurance on land rover so am going to start towing with my mum sat next to me, as she can tow on her pre-1997 license- crazy really as she's hopeless towing, but thats the law. It's not as hard as it seems, promise!
I'm sure if you asked someone could point you in the direction of a good towing instructor in your area :)

cant believe how helpful you are on this horrendously complicated 'trip you up' set of rules.

What a bloomin star.

Its just that I understand the rules which allows me to use the rules for real life senarios

Many find all the facts and figures confusing so find it easier to say what licence, vehicle & trailer they have and get someone like me to say whether its legal for them or not.

They might have either a vehicle or trailer and be looking to match it with something that works for them in which case I can give some info to go on with.

The problem can be trusting someone like me who is not an official to give them the right answer which is why I like to give answers publically so if I do make an error, which can happen, then it can be questioned and resolved.
