appologise in advance as i know everyone is possibly fed up with these types of questions - and yes i intend to pass my test soon....

meanwhile...

Nissan terrano 2.7 weighs 1750kg, average trailer weighs 1000kg, my horse weighs around 600kg.

GOV.UK says "tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg"

am i being thick here, or can i legaly tow my horse around? Im no brainbox but surely these wieghts add up to less than 3500? chuck in a bit of tack etc and yes we are possibly closer to 3500.

what am i missing?

I am planning on doing a long term hire (3months) of a trailer untill i get this horse sold. Then i will buy another horse and possibly a 3.5 lorry or at this point take my trailer test. But i need to get past this point first as i dont have 700 lying around to take a test which i may never use again.

On your own you cant tow with a nissan terrano on a b licence as the vehichle itself is too heavy. Under b licence towing to total combined maximum laden weight can not be more than 3500kg. Your nissan will weigh 1750kg empty. Whats its maximum loaded weight? You need to know that and decuct it from 3500kg. Whats left will tell you the maximum weight your trailer and horse will be. Its not legally possible to do it with a terramo sorry.

No you need the gross weight your trailer can carry and add that to your weight of the car.

Eta- check you've got the correct weights, I'm doubtful if that's the weight of a terrano, my estate car weighs 2050kg!

See post number 2000 of the HHO TOWING CLINIC - link below in my signature

Licences work on plated weights not actual weights

(MAM) is the missing bit but the DVLA missed it not you

Just wanted to say that £700 is a ridiculous amount to do your test. I passed mine last year and paid £350 which included the cost of the test and 6hrs practice tuition! I passed first time as the guy who did the training was fantastic!

With some towing experience the test can be done in a day - training AM and test PM

Again - see post 2000 in the TOWING CLINIC

well that does sound more realsitic price - thanks! I used to tow everywhere about 12 years ago but havent since, so might need more than 1 day - ive really no idea. but 350 sounds so much better!

When did you pass your driving test? If its before 1997 then you will be ok I think as long as you don't exceed the maximum weight your terrano will tow (3500kg I think). rog will confirm.
