Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. I've finally narrowed my search down to two new cars. One is the Range Rover Evoque 4wd which has a towing capacity of 1,800. The other is a Hyundai Tuscon 2wd which has a towing capacity of 2,100. My heart wants the Evoque but my head is saying the Tuscon.

My trailer weighs 1,000 and I will only be towing one horse (approx 500kg).

I'm confident the Tuscon will tow well but wondered if anyone has any experience of towing with the Evoque and could give me some advice?

Thanks folks!

It's an interesting pair of cars to narrow it down to!!
An evoque is for posing in.
If it really is between those two then I'd go Hyundai for towing but in reality there are a whole heap of other cars that could also be considered surely?

Yes you're right and I hold my hands up. I'm going partially for the badge with the Evoque but its also really nice to drive. I have to drive at least 250 miles a day for my job so want to enjoy driving the car. I'd be interested in hearing which other cars you think I should consider. Had a look at a few today.

Do consider resale....the Evoque is extremely attractive aftermarket and will retain lots of its value....I'm afraid although the Hyundai is a great car..it won't!
Have you considered a second hand Discovery?
Brilliant cars and will handle everything you throw at it....also nicer to drive than an Evoque...and you can get more hay bales, feed, tack etc in one!

With a B+E licence your options are almost endless so perhaps a look at the last link in my signature below will be worth a look

Hey Farmer Chalk,

I'd love to consider a 2nd hand disco, its my perfect car. Unfortunately I need to get a new one as its a company car and that's part of the contract. Also not really a problem re resale as its a company lease car.

I don't think the Evoque was made for towing, or any hard work, or to drive in fields etc perhaps towing a trailer onto a show ground. It was designed by Mrs Beckham. I agree with others in that it's a posing type of vehicle.
I don't know what the mpg is like in terms of your daily mileage, but I'd consider a Mitsubishi Shogun. They can pull too, and are comfortable.
I'd also look at the VW range - I don't know that the towing capacity is but the Tiguan is comfortable and the blue motion models are good for the mpg. The Toureg could also be an option but it's a big car for one person.
Or a Volvo XC60. We have a new one and it's comfortable, good on the mileage, got plenty of 'umph and it can tow.

Well something left field then....a Discovery Commercial.....exactly the same car but a van.....you don't pay company car tax at huge rates because it's taxed as a van!

There are lots of company's who then retro fit the rear seats back in them.... And you can't tell from the outside..it just looks like a Disco with privacy glass!

How would you get away with that then with a lease car its illegal. The seats cannot be put back in the new ones as all the mounting points have to be destroyed so it cant be done. The old ones you could however late 3s and 4s you cannot they got wise to it. Lets face it they will be out of budjet anyhow at circa 55k. The evoque at the end of the day is a freelander with a squashed top RR body stuck on top great for hairdressers and thats about all. The discovery sport would be more what you are looking for.
Would a pick up be out of the quiestion? The new nissan Navara gives you all the tax benefits of a commercial has the interior on a par with an up market 4x4 ie surround cameras, automatic emergency braking.New coil sprung rear suspension( they drive just like a car) 5 seats, 3.5ton towing and the big bonus 44MPG. With a top on the back its difficult to tell them from a 4x4 car. You would save a big wad of cash too from giving it to the taxman. A top of the range can be got for around 22k+ vat on lease they are around £225 /month. We have two coming next week for the farm. If you looked at one I think you would be surprised. We used to have modern Discos but dont miss them at all the Navaras are equally as good and half the price.

A. It can be done...it's not illegal as the conversion seats are fold down and thus retaining the van status... And I dread to think what you optioned it with as £55 k will buy you a full HSE Lux in a normal non Commercial..... Discos start at approx £40 k....

I know someone who tows one horse with an Evoque. Same reason it's a company lease car. I'll ask her. In terms of 4x4 capacity I saw a review of the Evoque and the 4x4 ability was good (to the reviewers surprise) got to be better than a 2WD Tuscan? Can you not have a Santa-Fe? Tows 2000-2500 (depending if auto or manual)
