think im going to go with the grand jeep cherokee, now which is best, manual transmission or automatic? friend had an auto and said it towed brilliantly but thought i ask you wise HHO lot for your opinions also

I personally tow with an auto and its dead easy. No thinking about what gear you need to be in on hills. All you have to worry about is length and width. Only downside is they tend to do less MPG and if anything goes wrong with the auto box very expensive to fix. Alot would depend as well on how old vehcile is. If old you could potentially get more problems especailly if high mileage.
 
Have a cherokee also and it IS manual

the one im looking at is 10 yr old and 89000 on the clock. would only be using it to tow with and drive up the yard daily to keep it ticking over. are the autos just as good for getting off muddy showgrounds?
 
They are great! very good at getting out of muddy show grounds, and that's with a old heavy rice trailer & 16.3 warm blood on board. better than the Disco & Pagero i had, the Pagero was also Auto & very good but the jeep is better in my opinion!
