I have a Vauxhall Insignia 1.9L with 150bhp and it tows my double horse trailer with my one horse easily. Trailer is lightweight around 630KG horse is 675KG.
You don't always need a 4 x 4 to tow a trailer although this seems to be so common these days and its quite unusual to see cars towing these days even though some can do so quite effectively.

In the 90's when I used to go to many fun rides with my horse I saw more cars towing trailers than 4 x 4's. Same up until around 2012/2013 when the emergence of cheaper 4 x 4's and second hand ones made owning them much cheaper and open to everyone.

Towing with a car does depend on your max towing weights, etc.
