Towing vehicles

I am looking to buy a new towing vehicle. I have to use it for work and to tow one horse to events, so ideally I want something that doesn't cost the earth in fuel to run but is capable of towing one horse and a trailer? People say freelanders should not be used regualarly to tow with, does anyone tow with a Nissan X-Trail? All suggestions very welcome?
 
I have a N reg Disco (2.5 diesel) and it comfortably tows a 510 and my 16.3 WB. It does really well on diesel even when towing and when I used to drive it to work and back 5 days a week (about 25 miles there and back) I found it didn't use any more money wise then my previous car (a 1.3 Suzuki Jimny)
 
I have an X trail for my daughter and truthfully I am not very happy with towing two with it. Fine with one but two it struggles particularly with hills. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it is the business and you dont really feel box and 2 large horses.
 
I have a new Freelander 2, TD4, auto. Its fantastic. I had the previous model Freelander and it wasn't as good. I tow regularly with 2 on board in a 505 trailer and it has no probs. On the fuel side though I do a lot of miles with school runs etc and I don't find it cheap but then I think any vehicle of that size, weight, and engine cc is going to be fairly thirsty. I had a loan new Discovery not long ago and I hated it - lots of blind spots, couldn't reverse it into my yard as I was just too long overall and I preferred my Freelander for the actual driving experience.
 
Get a Kia..... they have been the tow car of the year for two or three years running for the caravan club. I just bought one and it tows like a dream

Can't recommend 3.1 Isuzu Troopers enough. Great vehicles, will tow Ifor 510 and two large horses piece of cake. I bought an R reg in excellent condition a few weeks ago and am using it daily for work and still getting 30mpg. Good going for a vehicle this size and weight. Bargain at £2k. Would stress go for the 3.1 not the 3 litre, the 3.1s are much more reliable. My mechanic warned me about the 3 litre engines and said they have no end of problems. Good luck whatever you choose.
 
Yep another vote for Isuzu Trooper - fab for pulling two horses in an Ifor Williams 510. Mine is an R reg one two - long wheel base version. Although mine is the 3.0lr Diesel Turbo Duty version. There has been problems with this model - it was something to do with the turbo - but as long as you have checked that they have had the recall they are fine. I use mine everyday for travelling to and from work and for the farm and also find it's about 30MPH. Ace car would never get another !
 
when i was looking the nissan garage told me that the x trail would be no good to pull a 510 ifor and 2 horses. i ended up with the nissan aventura double cab and put a back on with windows etc. looks like a 4x4 now.
 
Currently tow with old Isuzu Trooper 2.5 - excellent and Kia Sorento Kia is good value for money - woud have liked a volvo but kia half the price just bought my second one and very happy but lacks power compared to trooper!!
 
Kia Sorento (2.5 diesel XS) all the way. I was going to go for an X-Trail but the weights are cutting it so fine even for one horse that I decided to go for the heavier Sorento, and I am so glad I did. I get about 32-35mpg out of it, so not super-cheap but it tows beautifully, and looks SO much nicer than an X-Trail (IMO). Lovely chunky solid car. If I won the lottery I'd just get the XT in black
