Hello

Does anyone tow with a 2WD VW Tiguan?

The towing capacity is 2000kg, I have a bateson deauville trailer (880kg) and will only be towing one horse at a time. The weight of the horses range from 500-700kg.

I do not anticipate being parked in a field or offroad as most trips will be for arena hires, clinics and shows at equestrian centres.

I was wondering if anyone could offer first hand experiences or advice regarding the 2WD version.

Thank you.

Any car is only as good as the tyres it has on, i would highly recommend getting Michelin/Continental etc. I noticed a massive difference when towing when i put good tyres on, this applies to 4WD & 2WD

I had one, it works fine for one horse (mine was around 600kg), I have had other very similar vehicles over the years, they have all been much of a muchness, will do the job but as I have needed for them to be every day cars I couldn't get anything better for towing without it being enormous and not practical for every day use.
It is tricky once you have towed with a massive 4x4 that can tow a lot more these do feel the pull on hills etc but other people I know that have them having not used anything more substantial are quite happy and don't notice.
If I was not worried about economy day to day I would go for something bigger.

I had the 4wd version and blew the turbo towing an Ifor 505 with one large but fine horse in it.
Lovely cars but not robust enough in my opinion
and as I say that was the 4motion one so likely better than the 2wd version

I'd go for a better equipped vehicle of you can, it's not always the off road,
gravelly paths/car parks with a slight slope/bit of ice are just another couple of places it is handy to be able to pop into 4WD

I tow with a 2008 VW Tiguan but it has a 2200kg towing capacity I believe - have towed my hunter type around 700kg and a Shetland together and it was fine, and it's done 1 horse up and down welsh and peak District hills easily - no complaints here!

I would dispute that 4WD is better on ice, it may depend on the extra tech these days but my 1993 Pajero could slide as easily as any 2wd car. Mud, for sure, and better clearance for irregular terrain and flooding.
