Towing with a Freelander - opinions please

the only experience i have had of a freelander was my friend had one, towed normal 505 and 14.2 pony, and the freelander died, it was just abit rubbish at towing
we have a mistubishi shogun sport, 2.5 litre diesel. bought it new, for much much less than 26000, maybe worth a look??

Ok, forgetting all that stuff about what's legal etc and concentrating on whether it does or does not tow...

I have a Freelander 2, TD4 SE, and I tow a IW 505, generally with one 12.1hh or a 13.2hh and the 12.1, but even sometimes stick a horse in either on its own or along with one of the ponies and it tows really well. The only prob is wet grass but I do try to avoid it. I managed to get out of a very sticky field and muddy gateway at a HT yesterday with two 13.2hh loaded and it was fine. A lot of our PC mums tow with them and so far nobody has had any probs, and nobody has been stopped my the police as far as I know! I think its a fab car that is perfectly able to two ponies, although I wouldn't try it fully loaded with two horses.

Our freelander tows Kia no bother and towed him and trailer out of a very muddy field last march without a problem.

Never had a bother towing in it. It is ok on MPG as my mum uses hers for work and only puts about 35 quid in it a week.

Thats the sport model 56 plate.

I have a Freelander 1 Td4 and never got the chance to tow a horse with it although it did have a towbar fitted. We ended up having to choose kids over a horse. It always tows our trailer well enough and we don't even notice it has anything hitched.

At the time of buying it, the Land Rover Experience man said he would always choose a Freelander over a Discovery to tow as it has better traction due to less weight.

We're now about to sell our Freelander - any advice on a suitable towing 4x4 that has reasonable MPG (at least as good as the 37mpg we currently get?)
