Is there any problem with taking the partition out of a trailer for transporting a single horse. I had always understood it was fine and that some horses preferred to stand diagonally but I am now being told (by someone who doesn't always know as much as he thinks he does!) that it is dangerous as it allows the horse to move about too much.
Would appreciate some fodder for arguments if it turns out I am right!

If its the type of trailer that has the bars hanging off the partition you will need to buy a full width breast bar (and maybe a breach bar for the back end) to replace them. Make sure you cross tie (lead rope to each side) so that the horse can't turn round. As for moving around too much, some horses prefer having the space to spread their legs to balance, some are quite happy with the partition and might even prefer it, you just have to try them.

Definitely OK to take the partition out, as long as you have a breast bar that will go right the way across the trailer. I have a horse who hates to travel with the partition in, he's useless at cornering. But without the partition he is absolutely fine, he likes to spread his back legs to stabilise himself and doesn't have enough room to do this with the partition in.

I travel my cob without the partition - I have the small Derby trailer and he has now grown too big to have the partition in.

I do have front and rear breach bars and he is cross tied.

He actually far prefers to travel with the extra room.

My first TB had to be travelled without a partition or she would slip and/or travel badly and stressed.

Cannot understand why you were told it was too danagerous.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I knew I was right.

It was my dad who was insisting it was dangerous. I am 32 years old, have a child of my own, yet when my dad tells me I am wrong I still can't help but doubt myself!

It's a real pain to remove the partition totally from my oldish Bahill trailer, but it's easy to swing either one end or the other. So, we've found that my boys actually travel better with the partition diagonally across the trailer - with it tied back to make a wide space at the back, but standard width at the front. My boys all invariably lean against the partition, but with their legs spready widely for balance. And like this they seem to be much less sweaty, and far more relaxed about travelling.

Just make sure the partition is securely fixed, so that it can't swing about while the horse is in there. And of course the usual rule applies of putting the weight (the horse) on the offside of the trailer.

Phew I opened this thread with trepidation having just taken delivery of two full length bars and planning to take my partiton out of the trailer tomorrow. So pleased to hear people have had positive results doing it

V&B some more fodder against your Dads argument ( I am exactly the same with my Dad lol!) is that if it was dangerous I guess Ifor Williams wouldn't sell the full length bars for the purpose

perfectly safe! i cross tie to make sure she cant turn round but so she can still move about to balance otherwise i find i get to the other end with my horse in a heap on the floor!
