Thankyou for all your helpful replies on the Bateson vs Ifor Williams question. Just trying to finalise whether to go down car and trailer or 3.5t box routes, however if go for trailer will be a Bateson ascot :D

Need to grovel for more info though! If we go for car and trailer then the Skoda octavia scout is currently our preferred option in terms of using for towing and still having decent mpg for everyday. Also has 4x4 which might come in handy if the weather is anything like last summer!

Has anyone towed with one? Lots of positive reports online for towing caravans but can't find anything for horseboxes :( also is there enough towing capacity? It says 1600kg. Bateson is 925kg leaving 675kg. I have one 16.1hh horse I'd say is around 550kg, then tack to go in locker in trailer and haynets. Possibly water container if it will fit but this could go in car. How close to the max towing capacity is it safe to go?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

That won't give you enough imo, have a look at the X-trail or similar, mine has a towing capacity of 2000kg and does about 40mpg :)

What engine does it have???

Haven't had a skoda, but all the Audi/VW/Skodas use the same engine and we have had plenty of VWs which were all fantastic towers... All were 1.9 diesels, and 120-140 bhp....

Hope this helps..

It would be a 2009 2.0 TDI, 138 bhp..

Good to hear they are good towers :) it gets around 48mpg with 50+ mpg on 'gentle motorway cruise' according to reports which was a big plus over a lot which were 36-40mpg if using it day to day as I have a 40 mile round trip to work

Sounds like it will be more than capable then snowgoose :D

I truly don't have an answer to your towing weights question, but in terms of performance we used that (or similar) engine to tow a single horse (horse and pony once in an emergency), and a flatbed trailer with 40 bales of hay and never had a problem.

Skoda Octavia 2.0 SCOUT TDI 5d 138 BHP 4X4 ESTATE 2009
KERB 1625
GVW 2130
TOWING 1600

B+E licence trailer can be 1600 kgs actual weight as long as the trailer plated MAM is at least 1600 kgs

B licence trailer cannot be more than 1470 kgs plated MAM so may need to be down plated
1470 minus 925 unladen = 545 kgs max load for trailer

Thanks :D I am old therefore B+E as standard :o

Have just been debating the Bateson deauville rather than ascot which is 65kg lighter (who'd have thought a tack locker would be that heavy ) which would then give me a comfortable 740kg for horse and extras. Will just have to lock sweaty tack in car if I'm away from trailer rather than in nice neat tack locker

Thanks for everyone's help. Feeling reassured its a good option :)

Hello Everyone

I currently tow a Ifor Williams HB505 with a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3L CRD.

I'm commuting 50 miles a day and need a car for motorway commute and some off road driving.

I'm looking to change the Jeep for a smaller 4x4 which can tow the Ifor Williams HB505 and still be ecomonical on motorway. I am also looking at swapping trailer for HB403 as have one 16.1 hunter.

The problem I have is that i love my Jeep!!! But the fuel efficiency is terrible. So I have looked at either keeping the Jeep and running a smaller car, or looking at smaller 4x4. I'm favouring the Freelander 2 Dynamic or Audi A6 all road, but they are expensive.

Does anyone have a good towing combination they can recommend?
