Does anyone have any experience of towing a horse trailer with a Tiguan? Thinking of getting one, but the salesman was very vague about its towing capabilities , and general off road performance.
Ok..........so my friend tows with one, not great on fields when they are wet / slippery - otherwise she thinks its great with not bad fuel consumption
Depending on model you are safe with a std double trailer and a large horse or two ponies - shows braked weight of 2200kg
Not sure how much you want to spend but I have just bought a Mits Shogun Sport 04 plate for £7k ( low mileage ) can tow 2800KG and are great towing off road.
I don't have any experience of them but my initial thoughts would be I wouldn't tow with one. I don't really think that was the thought behind their design. I have suzuki vitara (new shape 3dr). Obviously i don't have it for towing but i have seen someone towing a trailer with the 5 dr version and personally i don't think it's really suitable for the job and I would put it in the same sort of band as the Tiguan (except I think the suzuki has much better off road capability - hence why i got one for what i do use it for).
You be best looking at something like the Kia Sorrento, Hyundai Santa Fe or Terracen for a similar type of car but (I think) they have better towing capabilities and get good reviews on here. Plus you get longer warranties and a lot of gadgets for your money.
Do your research thoughs far as towing capacity is concerned. If a sales guy really doesn't know then get on t'internet and find out!
Obviously there are bigger better towing vehicles than those I mention but they are in the same sort of price range as the Tiguan. I know the Tiguan looks nice but really you want to be towing safely and unless you are in the market for a Range Rover, a Toyota Landcruiser, Mitsubishi etc etc or are prepared to go for an older 4x4 model you have to check the towing capabilities carefully.
For a girl, i'm a petrol head and I wouldn't tow with a VW Tiguan. If you want to tow with a VW go for the bigger Toureg but even they aren't really made for it. Both of them a just Chelsea Tractors or WAG Wagons cos they couldn't afford a Range Rover!
ok having read previous posts i'm going to contradict!!!
i have a tiguan and love it.
i tow an equi trek trailer with it with 1 or 2 horses.
i have NEVER had a problem so far (1 year) and have doing longer journeys, i.e 4 hours up to burgie and 2 trips to the borders. i have towed out of a wet field with out needing pulled out. i have parked in fields, on hills etc and it has always been great.
i have the Escape version which is the only one capable of towing 2500kg. the other tiguans can tow maximum 1800kg.
we (well my dad) did a lot of research into this and other cars and we are both very glad i got this one.
i didn't want a "big" car and i wouldn't change it.
but someone i know looked into getting one and was told never to tow over 2000kg's.
but they didn;t know the difference with the escape version. basically the positioning of the axles is different (and they have a slanting nose from the floor) which is why it can tow more.
i hope this makes sense.
it is amazingly cheap on fuel, insurance etc!!!
I looked in to buying one, the escape model was the only one equipped for towing and had all the off road gadgets, they are very good on fuel, I had a new shape land rover freelander now, doesn't tow as much and not as good on fuel but it is much sturdier on the road and when your towing you don't really feel the trailer is there, a friend of mine is a sales man at vw and he advised me not to get one, and stick to land rover as they are built to do the job.
