Hi there,

I am looking for a new car to pull my trailer. My trailer unladen weight is 920kg. My horse weighs about 560kg and I will be mainly towing her by herself. However now and then my friends horse of 580kg will be joining us.

I have been looking at both the Tiguan and Touareg and unsure on which to get. I am getting automatic, and would be looking at nothing less than 2l. Would the tiguan of 2500kg towing capacity suit my needs? The only thing I am concerned about is how expensive the Touareg is to run hence looking at the smaller Tiguan but I want to make sure it will cope for what I want :)

I am not looking at any other cars so please do not suggest other models, advice or pros & cons on each car would be very much appreciated :)

Ive towed with both. Touareg towed like a dream, barely felt a trailer behind you it was so good. I towed 2 in it no problem. My mothers Tiguan tows well but I dont feel Id want to put more than 1 horse in personally. It tows as well as my Kia Sorento which I also wouldnt tow more than 1 horse with. The Tiguan feels far more like a car so it just doesnt feel big enough somehow! Touraeg is the best, however Id say that yes it is a bit more expensive to run... my mother sold her Touareg to get the Tiguan due to its running costs. Both were/are auto

I tow with a Tiguan but it tows one horse well but I’d probably not risk towing two (unless both are small). I’d say get the biggest towing capacity you can afford - so I’d definitely suggest the touareg if you know you’re going to be towing two 500kg+ horses occasionally

We’re on our third Touareg and it tows our two with ease. I’m not sure how old you are looking at one but our last one had a full sun roof which we found leaked and damaged all the electrics. The latest one doesn’t have a sunroof! Ours is about 3 years old and had a service today (not a big one and it cost £369 😮). Of course, that was at a VW dealer and if you have an older one I’d go somewhere else.

Touraeg - get as much weight and power as you can afford.

Friend has one and towed two big horses like an absolute dream. The VW autos are lovely to drive too!

I currently have a 2018 Tiguan 2l 4motion, and I have to say it pulls lovely. I use it to pull a Ifor Williams 511 with either my mare and foal or else a 15.2 horse and a 13.2 cob and didn't feel like I was pulling anything. However I wouldn't pull long distance with 2 and its usually only 1 horse I'd pull. My father used it one day who usually tows with a Discovery and was very impressed with it. However I find it just drinks diesel but it's my first towing vehicle so maybe that's normal!

I do love it and its a great day to day car also but part of me wishes I spent a bit more and went for something that has a 3500kg towing limit, it'd be nice to not really be restricted!
