OK...

So does anyone have a Touareg and do short trips.

What sort of MPG do you get

(braces herself)

Friend has one as her everyday car (short drives to station to commute etc) and has never moaned about her mpg.

FWIW I think the newer VW auto engines are lovely to drive. I love my 1.5l far smaller version with fabulous mpg and would love to experience the 2l/2.5l equivalents. I also experienced said friend’s as a passenger towing two 16.2hrs and she again couldn’t rave about it enough!

I've just looked the trailer up and it weighs 1080kg so you'll be towing 1680kg. I assume you're not planning on taking other horses? Most of the models have a 2200kg capacity or greater so you'll be well within the legal limits of the car. I would imagine that those with the greatest capacities would cope well even with Devon's hills, although I've never towed with one myself. You do need to make sure of the exact model and its capacity though. It's on the car's V5 if you want to be 100% certain.
Where on the V5 would you find the towing capacity?

Not a lot! 😂 it’s a fab car but we got 32 if we were very luck and that was without a trailer 😂 was amazing for towing though!

Not a Tiguan but I had a Passat Alltrack to tow with for years; 2.2t towing capacity and my set up (massive Richardson trailer & 17hh+ draft horses weighing 800-850kg) was 2t. I went all over the place in it - often going for a few hours quite happily. I never took it on huge hills - the joy of living on the cheshire plain and close to the motorway network - and it wasn't the best in really muddy fields but it never got stuck like lorries seemed to.
Whether it will do the job for you depends on what job you want it to do - if it's steep, twisty hills you might need something more. We used to get over 55mpg in general use but towing it went down to around 30mpg, husband had it as his daily runaround and commuting car, if we did long journeys he could often push 60mpg!

I towed with a 2006 Touareg. Its mpg towing was around 20 mpg but the bills keeping it on the road got higher as it got older. It was a lovely tow car but tbh most tow cars (as in 4x4) are thirsty towing. When not towing we got an average of 45mpg if you drove it carefully. Like any big car - it was most economical on a motorway without a trailer. Now have a 2011 Volvo and it’s been much cheaper to tax and run, no big bills as yet….. my folks have a Tiguan and I cant see it would tow much really, I certainly wouldn’t tow with it.
