Assuming the vehicle had plenty of power and was heavy enough to tow safely, would you consider an automatic? I was surprised to see that some boating sites say that automatics are better for towing.

It seems that most used 4x4s for sale near me have automatic transmissions...

Think autos are eaiser because the car works out the best gears so you can worry about not taking out hedges and pedestrians!

Yes have towed with an automatic for the past ohh too many long years!
Works really well and as PR says leaves you free to concentrate on smooth breaking and accelrating.

With most 4x4 auto's you still have 1 2 and 3 gear selectable should you want it plus the low high ratio so you can't go wrong. And it all my years of towing I've never needed to use any of them (my cars have all been permenant 4x 4).

I've pulled lorries off muddy box parks with mine no worries.

We tow with our Auto Landrover Disco perfect ride for pony. Would not consider a manual now as he gets a much somether rider although a friend had a manual and tows happily.

I tow with a auto disco, absolutely excell!!! I have always been told they are better for towing and off roading, would def agree! I didn't actually want an auto and the ad for the car didn't say it was so didn't til i got there but v glad i did (it's my second auto).

Yep, another vote for Autos here, only thing you might find is if you do a lot of motorway miles you use more diesel, as ours used to change down a gear for even the slightest incline! But it did give a lovely smooth ride and was dead easy to tow with. It was a SWB pajero.
