TOWING WITH AN AUTOMATIC

What happens when you want to come down a hill slowly in an auto? I often come down the steeper, slower hills here in third so I don't have to ride the brakes the whole way. In an auto what do you do? I know you can force them into 1st and 2nd usually but 3rd is my preference. I've been writing of autos because of this am I missing something really obvious?

As autos are not the same then it is up to the driver to find out what options are available before setting off

Some autos have a 'B' button which sends the gearbox into a lower mode whereas others have the option to manually override and choose a gear

The one thing that should NEVER be done is to stick it in 'D' and leave it there - all options should be considered for every part of the drive

If the driver lifts off the gas does the vehicle slow down?
YES = got it right
NO = got it wrong
That applies to every second of the drive

I tow with a 3.0 diesel Grand Cherokee jeep 55 plate automatic. Best thing I ever did to change from manual 2.5 manual Grand Cherokee!

had two, rangrover and shogun both auto and petrol ,super for towing but thirsty ! but would have both again tomorow in fact would not have a manuel , and i do loads of towing. good luck.
