Hi all, I'm looking for some advice regarding towing with a Ford Ranger 2.2. Does anyone have experience towing 2 large horses with the 2.2?

I found a 2015 Turbo Diesel 2.2 for a great price but I'm slightly worried about the power factor. This model is cleared to tow 3500kg, but I'm looking for some real world experience/stories. Am I ok with the 2.2 or do I need to go for the more expensive 3.2 for more power?

Thanks!

Morning…I see the Limited Rangers as general work horses on farms and with gardening contractors but I’ve never towed a trailer with two large horses with one. I drive the Wildtrack with the bigger engine and it tows beautifully. Sorry that’s not much help is it…OH says torque is the important factor when towing..after that it goes blah blah blah to me…

Not a ford ranger but we have the 2L VW Amarok, also with 3500 towing capacity. Have happily towed 2 big horses in it up some serious hills (lane to our yard is incredibly steep) and it has never once struggled

I tow with a 22 plate Ranger Limited with the 2.2 engine. I usually tow one horse (approx 600kg) in a Cheval Liberte Touring Country. I find that it tows so well I often forget I have the trailer on the back! I have towed with two in it (a 500kg and 600 kg) which included a steep uphill climb and also two that I would guess were both around the 600 kg mark (15.3hh and 16.1hh). I can't say I noticed a difference in performance between towing one and two to be honest.

I also towed a few years ago with a 2009 plate 2.2l Ranger (manual gear box), but only one horse. Again I found it good for towing. The main issue is the pick up plus trailer is a very long combination so can be a bit awkward to maneuver in a small space.

I have towed with one occasionally when my son had a manual 2.2l and it was absolutely fine although it was just on roads, not muddy fields. We changed our HiLux to a Ranger and got a 3.2l automatic and it certainly tows beautifully.
