Towing with VW Tiguan

I'm new to towing and have a brand new VW Tiguan with a factory fitted retractable towbar.
Trailer has been in for service and on collecting the mechanic explained that I shouldn't have the breakaway cable around the towball - but there doesn't seem to be anywhere else for it to go.
I'm not sure if the towbar is missing a part and whether I should return it to the garage or whether this is standard. If so, where do others hook the breakaway cable?
 
Following as my brand new vw Tiguan with factory fitted towbar is being delivered on Tuesday! Out of interest what trailer and what horse are you towing with your T?

It's an HB505 and a 14hh pony.
Back in October when I ordered the car we didn't have a pony or a trailer - and weren't ploughing through mud to get to the yard every day. I think, if I knew then, what I know now, I wouldn't have bought new and possibly wouldn't have bought a Tiguan.
However, this is my 3rd Tiggy and I'm very pleased with her.
I haven't attempted to tow the trailer yet but my husband says she manages fine. We borrowed a Subaru Forrester for a while before Tiggy arrived and he feels that the Tiguan is better.
We haven't got the (reversing) camera but it does show on the information screen when the trailer is connected properly so it's an additional check. Bear in mind that the car has a 13-pin electrical socket but our trailer had an older plug (sorry, don't know what it's called) so we had to dash out and buy a converter.

Is the rectractable towbar in one piece or in two pieces bolted together

If its a one piece deal then they do not have a separate place for the breakaway cable so the only place is around the tow ball
They are a one piece specially forged bit of steel

On a two piece bolted together towbar the breakaway cable gets attached to the bit behind the bolts so if the bolts sheer the off and that leaves the tow ball useless then the cable comes into play
 
Our old car, a BMW X5, had a detachable towbar and after being told off at a safety towing clinic for having the breakaway cable around the tow ball we screwed in the towing eye bolt and attached it to that.

It has towing eyes fitted but they are too far from the towbar. Thanks anyway.
 
Thanks so much for that! My trailer is 2003 so will look in to that... Very helpful :)
