I tow with my BMW tourer 2.8, its fine it has a kerb weight of 1950kgs and will take one horse easily, two tinys. however it has very low suspension so every bump is like a mountain and if the ground isnt super hard or its slippy i wont use it.
would have to be minimum 2l, either estate or very big saloon might be ok for 1. you would need to check your weights, but i don't think anything but a 4x4 would be capable of towing 2 horses.
I tow with a Mercedes sprinter van, bigger than a trailer, tows better than any 4X4 I've tried!! Other than on mud of course!! I guess that's not what you meant though. I do see people towing with estate cars. Would depend on it's max weight and if the towbar was high enough.
I have done it in the past. Big old Volvo Estate, Ifor 505 with 2 little ponies in. No problems whatsoever. Have also used it to tow one big pony long distance. I only ever got stuck once in absolutely horrendous weather. Actually it's better to tow with than my LR90...
when i was younger, my dad towed my Ifor with his precious BMW 323 and 320. We had no other choice, so it was either that or nothing. Most of the time only travelled one horse with tack etc, biggest horse was 16h. Obviously if you can choose something else, then do so, but its not impossible! We were able to get out of most shows, even when the bigger vehicles were getting stuck!
There are a couple of larger saloons that can legally tow, I know one of them is a BMW, but don't know which one. There's a website somewhere which tells what they are, will let you know if I can remember what it's called.
30 years ago (before the new towing laws and well before metal trailer floors!), I know someone who used to tow two 14.2's in an old wooden rice trailer with a Morris Marina!
Yes - I know there will be several of you on here who don't have a clue what a Morris Marina looks like.....
