towing

I looked at subaru's when i was searching for a tow vehicle but at the time they were'nt man enough, not sure on the most recent ones though

Even the 2.5 Forester has a kerbweight of only 1510kg, and as the load it is to tow should not exceed 85% of that, which is 1283kg, the load would be too heavy for it to be safe. Remember livestock make any load unstable and to exceed the safe guidelines is insane.

The vehicle handbook will list its specifications including its kerbweight. It may also state the maximum it can tow. Just because it COULD move a load heavier than the car itself does NOT mean it is safe to tow a live load of that weight. A pony shifting its weight, coinciding with a gust of wind, a slippery surface, the camber on the road, can mean the car is unable to control the trailer, it can mean the brakes and steering will not work as expected and it could tip over. Please... don't risk it.

I find the 85% rule you guys have to suffer a little strange!

We are limited to towing whatever the manufacturer says the car is approved to tow! Which is often considerably more than the towing vehicle! ...and where the manufacturer does not have a maximum specified (which is generally only on vehicles prior to 1974 and a few exceptions) you can tow 1.5 times the laden weight of the vehicle! ...as long as the trailer is braked...any trailer over 750kg needs brakes.

For example, I have a Nissan Patrol tray back(probably about 1600kg)?...manufacturer says 3.5 tonne tow cappacity well over double the tow vehicle,...so 3.5 tonne it is!... as long as the trailer meets the braking rules.
less than 750, don't need em
750 to 2000, brakes on one axle
above 2000, brakes on all axles and a break away brake system.

I don't tow that much at highway speeds often but often move farm equipment of that sort of weight at lower speed and it's fine1(and the farm gear does not have brakes, it's exempt)

Even for sedans like Shell's Holden Commodore(3.8l V6) she can tow 2300 according to Holden as log as she has the heavy duty tow bar fitted(and does).. so she can hook up the tripple float, add 3 mediumish horses at 450 each and still be legal!

the 85% isn't a hard & fast rule, it's guidance.

IW505 = 1170kg (well mine does anyway)
2 x 15hh pones - approx 600kg each
allow a bit for people and crap
total load = 2600kg give or take.

Subaru foresters are not up to the job, you'll be looking for something like:

kia sorento
shogun/pajero
double cab pick up, like the misti l200,
troopers
landys (not freelanders)
rexton
fourtracks
terrano 2

would all suit your purpose. the maximum towing weight of the vehicle must be more than what you are towing.

www.whattowcar.com is excellent & will give you the maximum towing capacity of all these cars
