can anyone point me in the direction of clear cut correct towing regs?? I have been looking and the information out there is very unclear and it would appear interpreted by a shocking amount of people dangerously incorrectly.

I would like to make sure I have the correct information

I will try to answer your question in as simpler a way as I can so here goes ....

The following applies to both B and B+E licences

Find the vehicle GVW and towing capacity - both may be on the V5 keepers form
Find the trailer empty/unladen weight and the MAM - might on a silver metal plate

The internet is also where you can find the figures for the vehicle and trailer

Look at the towing capacity and the trailer MAM then use the lower of those two figures as the maximum actual weight which can be towed

Using that lower figure deduct the empty/unladen weight of the trailer and the figure remaining is the maximum weight that can be put into the trailer

Now the extra rule for B licence towing
The vehicle GVW added to the trailer MAM cannot be more than 3500

Some trailers can have their MAM down plated so it conforms to B licence towing but only if the manufacturer is still trading

Down plating a trailer will mean that its load carrying potential will be reduced because the empty/unladen weight remains the same but the upper MAM limit is lower

GVW and MAM mean the same thing = the maximum it can be when fully loaded
