Following. I have two JRTs who have chewed their way through numerous beds, throws... I want to give them something to divert their chewing away from things I'd rather not get destroyed. I am fed up of having throws that look like giant moths have been living in them :D If anyone has a magic solution I'd be grateful- I've never found anything that matches the allure of destroying a throw or removing all the stuffing from a dog bed!

My GSD will be 4 in Feb. To date he has managed to destroy, mutilate, puncture every ball he has been given and believe me I’ve tried everything. I bought him a Chuckit Kick Fetch for Xmas. As hard as he has tried to destroy it, this thing refuses to be beaten. Every other ball, toy, etc. has been punctured, disemboweled, degloved, deflated, wrecked within 5-10 mins of giving it to him. This thing has lasted 6 days of the roughest play, biting, chewing, tug of war. Basically everything my dog can do to try and destroy it and it literally has not even one teeth mark on it.
Cost me a bomb but I think I’ve finally found him a toy that will be around for a while. If it can survive this long then I think it has been money well spent. They come in a range of sizes.

I don't know whether you intended that to show an electric fence mains energiser but it made me laugh! :D:D:D:eek:

Ours (Rottweiler and 2 x Lab pups) have had buffalo horns for Christmas that last about 4 yrs, they seem to be lasting well. The Rotters had Kong toys that look like 4 legged octopus, the Labs manged to de-stuff a new one in less than 4 months.,

My dogs don’t get toys..... yep I’m THAT mean..... saves fights!

I do have to leave George the yappy terrier with a Kong filled with food to keep him quiet when I go to work, he doesn’t seem to bother with it once he has emptied it through (he burrows under my duvet and goes to sleep in my bed ?)

Everyday toys and balls aren't generally meant for sustained chewing/leaving with a dog to destroy, and it usually says so on the label, they're for throwing and carrying.

The Bionic range is good for chewers, I got two Bionic Bones from the USA but I think they are sold here now. I don't like horns or bones anymore as they can break teeth on very determined dogs. One of my dogs cannot have anything stuffed, he just eviscerates it. He lies on blankets/fleeces/towels/vetbeds and that's fine for him. Some dogs like the activity of flexing their jaws on things, it is relaxing for them. Starmark balls are good for this but again it is something I would never leave with a dog to destroy or tear up/swallow parts of. I always go at least one size up for balls and toys to prevent swallowing.

I would never leave a dog alone/in a crate with a stuffed toy. They can't have 'dog-beds' as such, either they get vet bed on a rubber mat because they chew everything else, which I think is a choke risk. I am pleased to say that the buffalo horns, which were recommended by another dog owner, have been a success so far, they haven't been able to break anything off them, they are not left with them, just in case but do enjoy carrying them around and swapping them amongst themselves.

my GSD doesn't give up toys so someone bought him a boomer ball for Xmas on the basis he wouldn't be able to pick it up and run but would have to chase it.
Has anyone else had problems with these or do you know if they cause problems?
He was chasing it and after a while I thought it was a very hard ball and wondered if it could break a tooth. I retrieved it to find the ball covered in blood (it was red so I hadn't seen) and his mouth dripping blood. Fortunately all teeth seem OK. Ball is no in the wheelie bin awaiting a decision what to do.

My terriers dont get toys, as they will fight over them. However they did have two Kong Wubbas which I used as retrieve toys for them.

My GSD has one toy, our prize possession which has really stood the test of time is our Westpaw Bumi <3 i literally love this toy. I'm sure you could get a smaller version for a smaller dog, but its fab as it really gets him going as it bounces irregularly and if he's really lucky when he grabs it, it whips up and hits him in the conk which seems to give him a lot of pleasure. He has the odd chew of it but he never really has a go at it (and he's a chewer) so I assume the feel of it isn't to his liking. Worth a go, and available on Amazon. I really rate ours.

Paddy, Boomer balls can blunt teeth.
You'd be safer teaching a reliable release command as he will end up self rewarding the need to have something in his mouth, probably something he shouldn't!

ah, I did wonder about the teeth. thanks
I did think it was an extremely harsh ball even for a big lad when it arrived.

thanks everyone for your insights, the kong croc lasted about 2 mins before he had pieces it and got some fluff out ? he is only 4.5 months old....

I have nylabones for the Willow and they last her ages. She is however a springer so hasn’t quite got the jaw capacity of a JRT but they are very robust. The other two have never felt the need to chew anything, bless em :)

I got my mothers Yorkie a WuffGlider...

He is 12 now, but still sets to destroy any and all toys, and will gut anything that has the temerity to squeak at him.

He loves it! It slides over the floor (even on carpet!), spins, squeaks occasionally (he isn't heavy enough to set it off just by pouncing) but squeaks enough that its Very Interesting. He also had to learn how to pick it up because its just too wide and deep to be easy for him so he has to think.

He entertains himself with it but we also play fetch!

ETA: this video is a bit melodramatic but
