... for your individual horses?

I am not 'having a go' and I appreciate that some people find remembering numbers difficult but I just wondered really?

Do you know what normal levels are for your horse?

what does TPR mean........?

grin.gif

Nope, don't know for my horse but I know what it should be generally for the average horse(text book stuff.) Might have to check this tomorrow.

Yes, I do.
Not only that, but I take my two youngsters' temps while they are loose in the field (don't tell the BHS
tongue.gif
).
And I've had years of entertainment with my Tb's resting heart rate (26 bpm)...

at both those points.

1) How the hell do you manage that?
2) How the hell does SHE manage THAT?

Did that on purpose.

I would suspect they are all fine, given that he is still on all four legs (last time I looked anyway

), but might see how he feels about me checking those this evening. Might be fun given his current state of mind

Fwiw I think it is almost as important to know these than it is to have a budget for your horse costs, if not more so.

If you know what is normal, then you know also what is abnormal.

Erm...only her temperature

But I have had her for 13 years and would hope I'd notice an increase in her breathing rate. I kind of know her pulse from checking her digital pulse in the spring - although I don't count the rate, I do know how it normally feels.

1. I tell them they are good girls, and pat them afterwards (I have had to do it when 3yo had a virus recently, and a high temp).
2. She has a large heart, but it is very amusing as vets have been known to conclude that she is 3DEing, when she is stood in front of them woolly and muscle-less, snigger.

I believe things have moved on from the BHS 38 - 42 bpm, and it's pretty much accepted the range is around 25 - 40 bpm.

What I would like to know is - those of you who know the answer to this for your horse. Do you know your own TPR??

I guess this is because I made a point of telling you that horse temperatures are taken rectally - and I can explain why I did that.
Many years ago a fellow livery at a yard, let's call her 'Sue' thought her horse 'Billyboy' was unwell, and asked to borrow my (Boots digital human) thermometer.
I handed it over, still in the packaging and carried on mucking out, etc.
A few minutes later, I walked past her stable and heard 'Oh Billyboy, do keep your tongue still!'
Sure enough, Sue had the thermometer in his mouth.
shocked.gif

I said helpfully 'No, dear, other end!'
She replied 'No, no, I read all the packaging and it said 'Hold under the patient's tongue...'

I can see how it would be useful to know these things, but I really think I can tell if they are feeling under the weather, just judging from their behaviour etc.

Also I would rather spend my what little time I get to spend with him doing something we both enjoy, instead of sticking thermometers up his bum - which I don't think either of us would enjoy!

I have a phone, at the other end is a vet.
smile.gif

I don't like to part with my money so easily (must be 'cos I am in Yorkshire) - so I would rather know whether it is necessary to call a vet, or whether I can 'see how he goes' for a bit.

I always take great delight in advising my students to use saliva as a lubricant before inserting the thermometer
grin.gif

and await the look on their faces before I add ... "by spitting on it"

Don't be so sure about the vet - after taking my 3yo's temp without any trouble in the field recently, I caught her in to the stable for the vet to examine.
She used a mercury thermometer, but let it go
shocked.gif
claiming that my 3yo had 'snatched it from her'. With her rectum?!
