Our old yard owner used to take the horses temperatures twice a day, every day and record them. Notes were put next to each horses temp if they had done something or there was something that may affect the temp (excessively cold/hot, exercised shortly before temp taking etc).
It was really interesting looking at the pattern of temperatures over a year, and also at times when it turned out a horse had been unwell, and the difference between the "normal" temp and the abnormal.
She was that organised that before they were turned out and after they were brought in they were done

Don't be so sure about the vet - after taking my 3yo's temp without any trouble in the field recently, I caught her in to the stable for the vet to examine.
She used a mercury thermometer, but let it go
claiming that my 3yo had 'snatched it from her'. With her rectum?!

Think thats why I wouldn't want to do it - I would be too nervous - and god knows how the horse is feeling
