I was looking into getting gps small gps trackers to plait into their tails to be able to check location if they get lost/stolen. It is such a mindfield, I have looked over small gps trackers, the ones I have found are from dodgy companies or don’t work for this purpose and I have looked into dog and cat ones, it’s either a subscription that is costly or the ones like pitpat without don’t work for my network, any recommendations?

Pitpat were pretty rubbish. I did buy one for my dog.
It could never find a signal. As a company though they are great, as advertised they gave me a no quibble refund straight away.

I now have tractives and they are far better.
You do have a subscription to pay but they have an outlet store on eBay with reconditioned ones. I got one and it looked brand new for £16.99
They may be worth a look
The cat ones are smallest!

Thanks all, might just have to bite the bullet! Tractive it is, is there a difference in the dog and cat ones apart from weight?
Not really no. My two dogs wear them, one a cat one a dog. They are the same except the dog is a little more accurate on history tracking. Both good on live

I am not sure the Tractive (or similar) would be practical. It needs regular recharging and if horse was stolen thief would just remove it!

Oo this is timely - I'm looking for trackers incase my dog or horses get lost in the New Forest 😂 I'm not sure one exists that will cope with the remote nature of where they could get lost?

Tractive seems to be the best. I walk a lot in remote places and did a ton of research and tractive seemed to be the best, if not perfect, it does seem to work so far.

I’ve just bought a Tractive mini for my rehomed yard cat and it’s been really good. I just can’t see it working for a horse though. It’s not inconspicuous so would easily be removed and the charge doesn’t last long especially if you live track. If you attach to the mane or tail it will probably just get knocked off or rubbed off or immersed in mud.

I think you’d be better ensuring your fields are secure and your horses are at least chipped (as legally required) and maybe freeze marked.

I don’t think horses get stolen that often , most just end up found locally and occasionally sadly found in a ditch.

I used a Tractive on Canada Common and it was useless.

Given that Canada Common isn't all that remote compared to other parts of the forest, I imagine it's even worse in other parts.

The dog xl version only needs charging once a month and it’s still only 90g. I was thinking of plaiting it into some hair in the middle of the tail so it would not be visible on the outside and would also not bother them

I’ve got a little Tractive I’ve had for pushing 7 years - I use it out hacking in case I get separated from my horse (and also so hubby knows when to get the coffees in) and have used it in anger a couple of times over the years and the accuracy is brilliant. It still works and the battery life doesn’t seem to have changed much. I’ve also got an old XL with a really long battery life but that’s very bulky.

Alternative if you’re paranoid is an Arlo Go 2 camera which lets you keep an eye.
