Just a Friday afternoon musing, but with the large increase in dog thefts I have been contemplating what would make a real difference.

Is there any reason why dogs couldn't be fitted with a tracking device similar to those that they use on wild animals to monitor their movements? Obviously they would have to be small enough to inject, like a microchip, but if there was a system where you could track your animals location via GPS then surely a large number of stolen dogs would be able to be tracked and recovered in an extremely short timeframe, and make stealing them much more unappealing.

Thoughts?

This article is interesting...seems technology hasnt come up with a gps tracker small enough to be inserted under the skin, like you can a microchip..
The best you can get is a gps tracker to put on the collar.

Before the microchips came into use many breeders tattooed a number onto the ear flap of their puppies..thieves,or people who wanted to abandon their pet, would go so far as to cut off the ears, to avoid being traced back to the registration centers.
This was in some way overcome by tattooing on the dogs inner thigh..harder to remove ,but not impossible.( skin abrasion,or cutting)

Even microchips can be cut out of the dog ,as I imagine so could a (futurIstic )inserted tracker,so there is no failsafe system as yet.

I did think cutting out would be a problem, but obviously hard to do and locate chip. hopefully dog would be found before they had the chance. Shame they cant make them small enough yet.

There have been several cases of dogs being stolen here (Ireland) and found with their microchips hacked out, the chips are easy to locate with a scanner.

Anything that uses a GPS signal requires a battery. In turn, the battery will need replacing or re-charging at some point, hence why GPS trackers can't be implanted. You would have to be cutting the dog open every few months to replace the battery.

Tracking devices are only really useful for locating lost dogs. They're not much use for stolen dogs because the thief would just remove and bin the tracking collar.

GPS tracking devices are hidden in really devious ways in cars/motorbikes/caravans etc but thieves are very ingenious and can find them if they try hard enough.
