I'm looking for a decent compact tractor that won't break the bank. I foolishly sold an ancient International some years ago and bought a heap of Chinese junk (see what I did there?).

I remember saying to the guy who took the International that it would still be going while the Chinese tractor was dead and gone. Boy, was I right!

Has anyone got any recommendations? It's for harrowing, topping and spraying 10 acres and harrowing and rolling a school.

I've got an ancient Ford called Betty. She's only little but does all of the above no problem. Paid around £4k (second hand) yonks ago and had her serviced a couple of times so very cheap to run. Caravan parks seem to have them and sell them off at the end of the season!

This is same as mine http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/ford-compact-tractor It came with cutters but had chain harrow and school harrow already.

We have an ancient david brown - cheap as chips, works perfectly and can be mended by us as it's so basic!!

You could use a 4x4 for harrowing/ rolling and get contractor in once a year to top/ spray

Yes, problem is I'm on heavy clay so I have a very small window of opportunity for harrowing the winter paddocks, and my harrow has three point linkage.

I'm quite inclined to go for an old tractor, there is a company locally that maintains them.

With David there is a fan club and I posted about a problem we had and a lovely old guy who used to work for them came out and gave it a huge over haul for free just becasue he liked working on them in his spare time and didn't have space at his home!

I do agre if you can your own kit is best as you can do things when they need it - we're on heavy clay too and it goes from to mushy to roll to cracked concrete in 2 days here!!

We have got an old David Brown called 'Baby Daisy', she is fab and when people need towing in winter she is the only one that starts and then has to jump all the modern ones!

Ours are all girls, I thought all vehicles were women? Baby Daisy is post menopausal though, no histronics from her!

Yes!! my OHs very big and posh john deere is called Esmerelda Green Lightening.

I love it!! And Primrose would be fine for yours, Faracat.
The newer tractors don't have names, you have to be old to have character, and the fergie is called...Fergie!!

Well improve on them then!! They are currently... 5150 (said fify one fifty), Will's tractor and the New tractor! I agree they are a bit dull but at least we know what we are talking about!! They are all red, either Masseys or Case so no special features.

All of our JCBs have been called Jacob but luckily we only have one at a time so it doesn't get confusing... I think we need to get out more!

Does anyone know where I can get a condenser for a fergie t20? Ours is a bit poorly

Old Twenty Part Co will be able to supply you anything you need.

And of Course Tractors can have Girls names I have a Unimog known as Galloping Gertrude and a County 1124 knowna as Samantha because of the Bonnet Bulges.

How sad am I? I have just spent part of Friday evening buying a fergie ignition coil on line, and am rediculously pleased that I've managed to get one. :D

We used to have a little grey fergie called Chuggy.I am a sad tractor nerd, was in the farmyard with the farrier and heard a tractor approaching down the main street.I absent mindedly commented that I could identify it as one of ours by the noise, sure enough it was our CASE that turned into the yard. The farrier was really impressed,I'm starting to worry about myself.:)

As you have found out, stay away from chinese. but Japanese are very good. we have an Iseki 318 outstanding work horse should last for ever. also have a kubota b6000, great fun very small machine. both are ideal for access into my sheds. one has a back actor so will dig drain etc.
easy to repair and maintain.

I'd like a fergie but aren't they ridiculously expensive cos all the old boys like showing them?

No, they cost more because they will still do a full days work. Also all parts are still available within 24 hours normaly.Which make of chinese tractor did you have and what went wrong?
