'Trade ads.' for puppies, may they be puppy farms?

Hi,

My first venture in the Dogs section. I am looking for a new puppy, have seen many on various websites, including some that say TRADE in the advert. I am very wary of anything that may be classed as puppy farming, but appreciate that not everyone that sells as trade is a puppy farmer or rogue of some sort.

Has anyone any advice to offer on this please?

Thanks

What breed are you looking for? Make sure you know of any relevent health tests for the breed, ask where the pups are raised (ideally indoors like ours), make sure you meet Mum, try and see where the puppies live, if they are lieing about living indoors they probably won't be able to show you.

Try and see the whole litter not just one pup they bring out. Ask then why they breed and why they have used the dog they have used. Ask how many breeds they have, do a google search on their email address if loads of ads with different breeds come up .. run away

If you want KC reg pups ask to see paperwork and ask to see health scores paperwork .. some people will say low hip score but in fact they never scored

Hope this helps

And if you do end up somewhere with the puos in a state and your not happy DON'T buy one to save the pup, all your doing is making sure they continue to breed

If you're after a particular breed then I'd go to a breed club (ie the XYZ club of Great Britain) or the kennel club and cross-check with a list of accredited breeders.

While appreciate that not all breeders who advertise on the web are bad, this is a good way to make doubly sure.
If they are producing lots of different breeds, especially of wildly varying types, ie 'best sellers' - (puppy farmers near us breed everything from terriers to large spitz breeds) stay away.

If they don't want you to come visit and go into puppy pen, if they say 'can deliver', stay away. Any reputable breeder will be more than happy to let you look around their facilities.

If they do not let you see mum, stay away.

Look out for dodgy certificates for fake breed registers and health checks, anyone can run one up on their PC.

Agree with RB, don't take a pup because it looks poorly. Healthy puppies with good characters will be exciteable and will run up to the front of their pen/box to see you and check you out and will not shy away and stay in the corner.

To be absolutely sure you don't get a puppy farm pup go to a rescue centre and get one that someone else dumped

I think this is a good question..just what is a puppy farm?

So much depends on what sort of dog you want to buy....and like a friend of mine once said..If people didn't make money from breeding puppies, nobody would breed, so, the breeder who says they make no money whatsoever has to be pretty stupid, don't they?

I would rather buy a puppy from an experienced breeder who knows her breed and understands what her dogs need. I would not buy from a breeder of a pet bitch who has no clue about worming and nail cutting and thinks that if she kisses and cuddles the pups then they will turn out just fine and dandy.

People who breed puppies do so for money..or they would give them away for free. I would prefer someone who knew what they were doing.

When looking for a puppy, I would want one that is well socialised and if possible had some dealings etc with children. I would want to see it had clear eyes and clean ears and didn't back off from me. I would want to see the mother but wouldn't always expect the mother to be still feeding 8 week old puppies. I would want to know what foods were being fed.
