From a very good friend of mine..shocking..i really feel for her...

"Found out today that as a disabled person in a mobility scooter I was invisible to many sales people at YHL. I ended up leaving early without going to half the stalls I wanted to. Feel humilitated. Won't be going again thats for certain and I am considering writing letters of complaint to the companies involved. I felt like shouting I am an endurance rider and I have 7 horses............NOT HAPPY."

In 2011, discrimination is alive and well...

:mad::mad:

I'm afraid to say it was much the same for my friend when she last went, including members of the public banging into her scooter and wacking her in the head with whatever they happened to be carrying at the time xx

That's dreadful but sadly not surprising to me, My Dad had a stroke last year and was paralysed down one side, he is now in a wheel chair and taking him shopping etc can be very frustrating...people hardly notice him and ignore him to speak to me-he is perfectly capable of ordering his meal or paying for what he's bought but he is just ignored. It makes me so mad :( tell your friend to complain, this attitude has to change.

My mother too, was in a wheelchair for a while after a major back operation, and she too tended to be ignored in favour of the person pushing the wheelchair (I'm not referrring to YHL here). They seem to think that anyone in a wheelchair is stupid or unable to communicate. Unfortunately it seems that this attitude is all too common.

I so feel for the lady at YHL (actually a friend of mine too). She is certainly NOT stupid, and is in fact very eloquent. She is also a very brave and determined lady. She does not deserve to be treated like this.

BTW if I may add on her behalf, this wasn't the organisers of YHL (I understand that the staff were very helpful), it was actually a certain number of traders. But I can understand why she was distressed if it was happening time after time.

I work for a charity which loans mobility equipment and this is by far the biggest complain "I'm invisible - people just walk out in front or ignore me". If these users weren't able to get around they would be at home keeping their money in their pockets so please traders et al it could well be in your interests to actually engage with the mobility impaired. Surprisingly they have a brain, a voice and if they can - money to spend.

I went to YHL and it was heaving, I was getting pushed into by people constantly, being ran into by hideous children and ignored by some traders - I think it was just too busy. I don't think you friend was singled out as she was in a wheelchair, that was just how it was for everyone.

Your poor friend :( :(
I have to say though the place was very over-crowded, I think they need to find a bigger a venue for it or limit the amount of people they let in (no excuse for your friend, but I hated it & couldnt move around the stands in peak times)

What a shame, I have to say I went to Top Gear Live instead of YHL, I used to go around 10 years ago but as it got busier I enjoyed it less and less. There are nowhere near as many bargains as there used to be and I find being in a hot, cramped hall being pushed about (I am vertically challenged!) by rude people just not the way I want to spend a day. I would only go and watch the demos now.

I'm so sorry that your friend felt bad but I have to say the above is also my experience of YHL (or YH-Hell as a friend of mine dubbed it last year- we didn't go this year) so maybe she can take comfort from the fact that everyone was being jostled, ignored, irritated by irritating kids etc and she wasn't being discriminated against, well at least I hope not anyway.

I am so sorry for your friend but as others have said even able bodied people get hussled!

I like many others stated STOPPED going a few years ago due to YHL Hell - it seems the organisers cram as many people as possible in to justify the costs of selling a pitch to the traders!

I remember when it was the Equine Event! Very civilised back then!

Now it seems full of chavs buying their pink whips which then in turn poke you, so you turn round to see whats poking you only to be winded by a chunky fuller fillies wearer with her 10 'bargain' turnout rugs that she bought for one entry to win one bale of shavings!!!!

Sorry but being disabled but mine is hidden I cannot justify the bruises and being bashed by everyone just to have my name and address to be put in a 'entry form' to win a non existent prize.

It is commercialisation gone mad!!!!!!

Sorry to the brave souls who love it! But I gave up going a while ago!

I can well imagine the difficulty anyone with any sort of mobility problem had at YHL yesterday. One of my major gripes is with the people who insist on taking push chairs/buggies etc. These are remorselesly pushed into peoples ankles to permit the pusher free access to stalls etc  I also found that many of the stalls were so tightly packed that anyone in a mobility scooter would be unable to get into them anyway. The way that people with mobility problems are treated in the general run of things is dreadful, both my ex-foster daughter and my aunt are wheelchair users, both inteligent lively women, who talk to each other about 'rude upright people'.

I actually got run over by a huge buggy, it wasnt even in a particularly busy area :confused: i have been going for more years than i remember, maybe since it started, 15 years? It has got sooo busy now, but when they ran an extra day it wasnt popular  i also think it may have outgrown stoneleigh

I can remember when it was the Equine Event too. I don't think it needs to change venues, I think they need to put a cap on the numbers let in. Just imagine if one of the fire alarms went off in the trade stands it would be horrific. I would also ban buggies from the shopping area, they are not nice for the people they are bashed into and surely the porr children don't enjoy getting their heads smashed by shopping bags.

What a shame, but wish she'd come to us, she could have compared mobility scooter performance and hazards with my friend (and business partner) who has one.

I would think it was difficult to move on one in the aisles, particularly on the saturday as there seemed to be lots more people that day.

As a trader and a visitor I do love YHL and its a shame if she didn't enjoy it.

I sat and watched the demos, really couldn't be bothered with the shopping, it was so so so busy, I just couldn't look without being pushed and shoved !

And as for the lack of toilets for the Ladies ! Don't get me started on that ...................!

Would I go again ..............yes but not for the shopping !

I dont think its outgrown stoneleigh as there is loads of room there not used at YHL.
Its not well oganised and could be much better.
Sorry to say that a lot of horsey people are just downright rude! Pushing, shoving, standing on your feet and just stopping in the middle of a busy aisle to have a chat, holding up the hundreds of people behind them.
Not enough toilets, not enough space to sit to eat yor lunch etc.
Dont think I will bother next year.

They added a lot more loo's on the sunday out where the food area was. Hopefully the organisers learnt their lesson on that one!

Lack of ladies toilets??? There were about 20 out in the food area (nice ;) )

What griped me most was people INSISTING on saving seats at the demo. If your arse isn't IN it... it isn't taken sweetie.

Not that I had that problem but was sat infront of a few people who kept shouting at people that the 4 seats inbetween them were "taken". They were either very rude or very thick, because there were signs everywhere saying that seats were not to be "saved".

As for the shopping, yes, I agree - it's becoming more and more of a cattle market and more aimed at kids and the lower market, I think. Which is why I doubt I'll be going again.

There were not loads of ladies toliets on sat, there were massive ques! Have to agree the outside food area is not a nice place to put them. There was not enough seating there and due to the rain the night before all the seats were wet, there is plenty of room in the other cattle sheds. Why not have a seating area in there?

I liked YHL when they used to have it on three days... always used to go on the Friday because it was considerably quieter and for someone who gets a bit panicked and claustrophobic like myself, it was a much more comfortable environment. But I'm guessing that's the reason the Fridays got dropped - not enough ticket uptake to justify keeping it :(

We were there on Saturday and whilst it was busy, I didn't find it unbearable in terms of people... did a lot of you go Sunday because that may have been the worst day? I didn't have a problem with the ladies loos either, the extra portaloos by the main ones in between the two big halls were a handy addition, especially as a lot of women didn't realise there was a row along the back so I didn't have to queue at all.

I do feel sorry for the lady in the mobility scooter - there is no excuse at all for bad manners.
