Hi All,

My poor boy has had a lameness work up and unfortunately had to have his leg shaved. How long does it take feathers to grow back ?

Thank you in advance

B had a hind fetlock feather (just at the rear and a little to the side) shaved at the end of October. its virtually grown back now 5 months later, but if i were showing her, then I'd not be doing so yet as its a bit 'rough' and any picky judge would possibly notice.

If you wish to keep them clipped then they grow too quickly, however if you want them to grow it is not quickly enough.
This! My clipped out one seems to grow about a inch of feather in a matter of weeks. He doesn't even have that much naturally. The traditional if he was to be clipped would I imagine, take ages! Perhaps the time of year takes in to consideration too.

The microcob has Dales in her and I swear you can watch her feather, mane and tail grow. She was clipped to the skin for a lameness work-up Jan 2022 and was back in full feather mid summer.

My bigger cob takes a lot longer. He was fully clipped out last September for a show and still has that 'leg hair growing out' look going on.

The best thing I can advise is to clip all 4 legs otherwise it really does look ridiculous.

I love his feathers and he'd look odd with them all off. Big boy with skinny legs. Its looking more likely our showing career is over (goes without saying his health will always come first) it's just hearth breaking

Mine takes a couple of coat changes for his to come back. He had his hinds clipped off at the end of November for a scan. Currently it’s growing back wiry and curly. Last time he had his fronts clipped (scans again!) it was a good year until they looked normal again.

My other worry is he's likely to need his leg medicated at least once a year for the foreseeable. I was hoping 6 months growth would be enough. so medicate again in Oct and be read for the showing season April time. I guess it might be time to look to dressage
They are likely to grow back coarse to start with - 2 coat changes 9as mentioned above) should see you back to where you started from before it happened.

I think it’ll depend precisely where has been clipped. Mine had his tendon sheath area clipped last year, and that grew back normally within about three months. The feathers do take a while. Hope you don’t get the poodle perm phase my horse has to go through
